Help, I'm new to the site and need some advice. Have been told that the head gasket on my Y reg Punto is failing. They have quoted me £525 +VAT so £618. Seems a lot is it? Also had no problems with car till had it serviced and now its one thing after another, seems odd.

Hello, have just joined Fiat forum after being redirected from another site. Glad to see there is a massive amount of info out there...very useful and have only skimmed a tiny amount. I have a 1.2 Punto Y reg (2001). Everyone I know takes the mikey out of me for driving it but I love it! HAving a few probs at min head gasket seems to be failing not sure if quote is realistic (£618), seems to be a common problem though.

Re: head gasket

think the price depends on where your from i paid 350+

but if your confident the cheap option is to do it your self:)

Re: head gasket

No not confident at all, live in west sussex. Looked on shouldpay.co.uk and they suggested £223.66 but not sure when last updated.

Re: head gasket

id shop around m8 i was loyal to my garage till they gubbed my gearbox
and the first place i phoned saved me 90 quid:)

Re: head gasket

even offer to source the new gasket yourself then they can do it buckshee
give you a better price too:)

Re: head gasket

Think thats probably what I'll do. Thanks a lot for the advice I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks again

Re: head gasket

Make sure they are using a fresh set of head bolts as they apparently are stretching bolts which don't work too well on a second application. Also get the garage to replace your timing belt and tensioner if they are anywhere near needing renewed as most of the cost for that is in demounting the engine which you have to do to get the head off. Plus you have to retension it as part of the re-mount.

Quotes I got were from 450 to 850. Ended up doing it ourselves for just under 100 quid including timing belt, and tensioner renewed along with gasket, oil change and new filter. Massive job though if you are like me. The haynes manual is a big help. You'll need a hex 13mm ratchet on a breaker bar with a 1/2 inch drive to get the head bolts off if they are anything like mine were. A torque wrench too to put it back on. Basically if you don't have the tools and the time you are probably better going with a decent quote from a mechanic.

PS when you pop open the gasket the coolant mixes into the oli which pretty much gubbs it totally.

Thanks to all for advice, comments etc. (y) Have phoned round some other garages all of which told me could be something different! Fortunatly have a friend who is a mechanic but lives quite a way away so bit of a risk taking it but think only sensible option I have right now, have breakdown cover so fingers crossed!

Just wanted to say thanks to all for info and advice. Took car to garage today much better informed. Got a better quote than before and a document listing the work that they will do including the bits you guys talked about, e.g head bolts, timing belt, tensioner, thermostat, oil change and filters. Many thanks :D
