Hi, Right in my last tread i asked about my power steering. Becuase it doesnt work no more and people have told me it will be the power steering pump. I called fiat and they said it will cost £530 for the pump and they will fit it in for £88. Ive found the part for £200 and wanted to know could someone just change it or does fiat have to do it because or any codes or anything like that?? or do you think i could buy the part and ask fiat to fit it in for £88 or will it go up because im not buying the part from them??

As Dan said are you sure its a pump not a Power steering motor? You might be better searching breakers yards and ebay for a new power steering unit, £530 is crazy and im sure any garage would fit it.

hiya mate all i could tell you is my car is a 1.2 2001 fiat punto.. its got black bumpers if that helps? yeah i think it is that motor.

You have a Punto Mark 2. The same thing happened with my Power Steering Motor. As i said have a search around for a Motor and only use Fiat as a last resort.

ok thanks again mate. when yours went did you have to get fiat to fit it in or someone else?

As has already been said, it is probably something like your torque sensors...or simlar here...virmins has just cost approx £400 for the sensors to be fitted and calibrated.

And no-one has told you that it is a power steering pump, as far as I am aware.
But you have been told that only Fiat can sort this problem out for you, so you will save nothing by getting it fitted elsewhere. It is a common problem and has a lot of information on the subject on the forum.
But unfortunatley there is no quick fix or cheap solution to this, if that is what has gone wrong.

If fiat said its the power steering pump go somewhere else as they obviously have no clue.

yeah i no but its easy to say aint it? i mean comon £500 is alot when you dont have any money at all. thats why im trying my hardest to just find someone whos had it done somewhere else. i dont think i could pay that much :(

Go to a few garages mate, say that the power steering motor is knackered. Just get some quotes and ask if they can do it or if you have to take it to fiat. I had mine done at Fiat as the car was under warranty so was all free. If you can find a cheap Motor from a breakers yard then im sure any garage would fit it.

Obviously no one reads the guides!

The 'motor' rarely fails so chances are you will be wasting money on this part, its more likely to be the torque sensors.

Like it or not its needs calibrated so you have to go to a dealer.

If fiat said its the power steering pump go somewhere else as they obviously have no clue.

The 'unit' is often incorrectly refered to as the pump,it is however as you stated incorrect.

guess what people! ive got it fixed!! :D it only cost me £100 thats for part and fitting it in to!! :D right happy

my uncles did it. they got me a new motor and just replaced the old one and everything is working wicked now :D im right happy its saved me £500 :D

hi i had the same problem.... i spoke to a mechanic i knew and he said this happens alot. put a quote out to carsparefinder.com and i got brokers phoning me up the next day quting me for 100 pound for the part and 10 pound delivery. then just get a garage to fit it. it shouldnt cost u more than 200 pounds all in all and even if it does it better than going to fiat.
