Hi,

It looks like my brother needs to replace the battery on his 2000 Sporting.

The battery case/shape is I understand unique to these cars, and he has been quoted over £55.00 for a replacement.

I was wondering, has anybody found a way to fit a cheaper "standard shape" battery to their Punto, and saved themselves about £20.00 in the process? If so, how did you do it?

Thanks

Who quoted you that? Im sure T1 said couple months back proper fiat battery is only £41, and it fits straight in.. But a normal battery you can get it to fit with bit of persuassion.

Genuine Fiat £41...mark up on batteries is good so dont be afraid to ask for bit of discount.Alot of motor factor books list a battery that is slightly too big so you have to bend the surround which looks naff.

thomash...ask yourself this, would you buy a set of duracell batteries for your digital camera or a packof yuriskhmaho :)rolleyes: ) cheepo batteries! The battery is the heart of your car so spend a extra few quid for a decent battery, varta, excide etc...

Hi,

I got the quotes from Andrew Page £57.00 + vat with a 3yr g ,and the other from ATS £59.00 inc vat with a 2yr g.

It's interesting that Fiat is cheaper!

Maybe the thing to do is to go down to the local factors and see what we can fit in.

Thanks to both of you.

My mechanic sourced a "normal" sized battery (not FIAT size), cut the front of the batery tray out, and clamped the new battery in place with a piece of wood under the bracket. I ended up with a better battery for £20.

Bet that looks good with nice piece of wood:confused:

If you think a aftermarket £20 battery is better than the correct original battery of correct rating then good luck to you.

Exactly what I did. I painted the piece of wood black so it fitted in :D

The new battery from Halfords was a higher rating than the original.

( for a 1.9D)

Having said that, the ability to check the charge visibly on the Fiat original was interesting.
