There sould also be a bump stop at the bottom so the glass doesnt thump when it bottoms out and so there is some cushioning from road bumps. When colour coding the handles dont forget to lacquer them - finger nails can soon scratch the paint. Also consider removing the locks and plating over the inside with security plates. The holes can be covered with body coloured caps.

Posts: 3 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 | Re: how to remove mk2 door card and outer door handle Thanks for the useful pointers! I couldn't open my passenger door from the outside (03 5dr Punto), so I followed your guide to getting the panel off and managed to reattach the push rod from the handle to the fitting behind the lock. It was a bit of a faff cos you can't quite see in, you definitely can't see in once you've got your hand in there, and there's only room for one hand! ![]() The fitting looked slightly different to yours (wasn't white), it had a hole in the middle and a little clip that holds the rod end in to the hole. I'd recommend freeing the little plastic clip from the actuator it's attached to, fitting it to the rod, and then plugging it back in to the actuator. Took me half an hour to work that out, hopefully I can save someone else that time by sharing my findings! Cheers, Child

Both my handles need doing as they both came off in that terrible winter last year ! The Passenger side was the worst and after a good couple of hours at it i finally got it all back together again , i reckon i could do the other one now in 30 mins . One thing that was not your fault but this may help someone else - the plastic linkage thing that you said had to be twisted off the linkage was on my 2001 Punto a black clip not a white one which led to about 20 mins of me faffing about peering into the car door wondering if i was going to twist and break something that should never be twisted ! Awesome guide mate and thanks very much for posting .

Posts: 22 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 | Re: how to remove mk2 door card and outer door handle Hello everyone here, I got some problem with tail gate trim console fitting. Last few weeks I am observing my Punto rear door rattling noise, initially i could not find the problem but yesterday I saw one nut came off the Rear door lock , so lose lock fitting creating the noise. I tried to unscrew the panel trim but it is not coming out of the rear door, without dismantling the rear trim i cant refit the nut to the lock. My question is , is there any trick to open the trim after unscrewing all the screws from the panel? I have Punto 1.2L 8V 2001 model.

The window was stuck because faulty window motor so i couldn't pray upper part of the cover from the gap as in the guide. Than i pray the plastic from the inside. Use a screwdriver so it pops upwards. Wawa wiwa. Very nice. How much?

Posts: 1,028 Thanks: 24 Trader Rating: 0 | Re: how to remove mk2 door card and outer door handle Dave, thanks for the guide. I'd like to add some additional comments after my experience last night. Practicalities 1. A small inspection mirror and head torch is very useful for working out what goes where round the door lock mechanism 2. Watch out for the grease on the door handle release rod...it's easy to get it everywhere 3. As per the Haynes manual, you will get extra hand room inside the door if you remove the anti-theft partition. This can be done by drilling out the 3 aluminium rivets, then manipulating the plate out through the aperture. Make sure you collect any bits that fall into the bottom of the door, they could rattle about when the door is reassembled. 4. The plastic sheet is well bonded to the door. I used a sharp razor blade scraper in a sawing motion, while pulling gently on the plastic sheet, to remove it. This worked well. Door lock mechanism 1. It's held on with three Torx screws to the outside edge of the door. These have thread lock, so there's a fair bit of force required to break the seal. Removing the rods 1.There are three rods that connect to the door lock mechanism - the outside handle, the inside handle, and the door lock knob. These all attach to the door lock mechanism in the same way. The rods have a small right angle bend at the end, this bend fits through a hole on an arm connected to the door lock mechanism. The infamous plastic clip then clips round the rod to stop it popping out of the hole. On my car, the clips are black. 2. Have a good look at the clips first with the mirror prior to removing, so that you get the idea of how they work. 3. Removing is easy - open the clip out by rotating, then pop the rod out the hole. Refitting the rods It's tricky, no doubt. But not too bad. Having access makes it easier, that's why I removed the anti-theft partition. There are two additional tips: 1. Make sure the plastic clip has not rotated on the arm. If it has, just turn it back to the right orientation. This makes it easier to put the clip over the rod. 2. You can use the internal door handle rod as a hook to pull the corresponing arm towards the front of the car. This makes it much easier. You can then access both the rod end and the arm at the same time. Shove the rod end through the hole on the arm. If you've pulled it forward as suggested, it's quite easy (make sure that you are pushing it the right way, it's easy to get back to front!). If you jiggle/vibrate it a bit as you're shoving, it will find its way. You won't need much force. Once the rod is in place, rotate the clip over the rod. You'll feel it click into place. Open the door from the inside a few times to make sure it's working OK. If you try to open the door before you have put the clip over, the rod end will pop out the hole and you will have to start again... Job done, cup of tea.

Posts: 2 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 | Re: how to remove mk2 door card and outer door handle Hi all, My car front driver-side door got damaged recently (though the window and door card are in tact) so I'm having to replace it. I've managed to find a replacement in the same colour from a braker for pretty cheap, however the one they have has an electric window, and my car uses a manual mechanism. Is it possible using this guide to replace the electric window with a manual mechanism, via exchanging the door cards? Any help is greatly appreciated Nik
