hello everyone.

im having a weird problem on my Punto Evo.

from time to time, the gearbox disengages from the engine, for like a second, and then engages back.

for example, yesterday, while driving out of town, i was in 5th gear, at about 130km/h, at approx. 4K RPM, the gearbox disengaged from the engine, the RPM went down to about 1K, the whole car vibrated and choked, and after that second, it engaged back and everything went back to normal.
it feels like that gearbox wants to go to 6th gear, disengages the gearbox from the engine, and then remembers there is no 6th gear and goes back to 5th. like its getting confused.

this happened several times during my trip.

what could cause this issue?
how can i fix this?

thanks in advance.

thanks for your reply.

would i get any fault codes if no warning light is lit in my instrument cluster?

i think the battery is 4 years old. should i consider replacing it?
can a weak battery be the cause to all the problems i stated? the vibration in 1st gear and the disengaging in 5th?

i talked to a dualogic specialist in my local fiat garage, and he said it sounds like the problem is the clutch, which will need to be replaced. is that possible?

thanks again,

Mozes.

so i went to visit my garage today.

they checked the car with the examiner, and no errors. none whatsoever.
according to them, they checked the gearbox, some sensors, and the ignition.
did not find anything.

so i asked them, whats next? how can i find the problem and fix it?
their reply was - we dont know. just great.
what else they told me? to keep driving and wait until an error light turns up in the instrument cluster and then come. awesome :bang:

they said there's no way the battery can affect the gearbox, and they dont think its the clutch either, but like i said, they didnt know to tell me what it is.

whats next? this is very annoying.

thanks again! i appreciate the help!

ho,
do you TRUST the garage..??

personally I would replace the battery ( with a good brand like BOSCH)

all the electronics on a modern car need a STRONG / STEADY supply of power,
a failing battery can cause chaos.. and for a relatively small outlay, you will know if the battery cures it,

i trusted them until now, but after the last visit, they kinda pissed me off.
they didnt know what the problem was, so their solution was to tell me to keep driving like this until a warning light would appear on the dash.
that is very unprofessional.

i cant help but thinking, maybe i diagnosed the problem wrong?
maybe the problem isnt the gearbox, but its actually a sensor? or something else?

after speaking again to someone i do trust (hes a very professional fiat mechanic, which specializes in the dualogic gearbox), hes says he thinks its the clutch.

is that possible?

on another note, just small question.
whats the manufacturer's instructions regarding the timing?
when do i need to replace it? my car is 4 years old and has 73,000 km.

thanks again for all the help, i really do appreciate this alot!
