2010 Punto EVO GP Problems:

I'm onto another problem with my Punto Evo - Power Steering was the most recent - But now, for what appears to be no clear reason, I am getting the message "Stop and Start Unavailable. Check Engine" message on my display.

The car has been working fine. I drove it for about 40 miles today, parked it up and up until this point the car was working as normal. No error. Nothing.

I return to my car, start it up and get a beep and the error message with accompanying warning lights.

Any ideas what this could possibly be?

I'll be ringing the garage tomorrow just hope that if anything needs doing in terms of parts, that's it's going to be covered until the third year of warranty.

Couldn't see that bringing on the EML though?

Why not? Error P181D neutral switch callibration does bring on the engine (or should I say more correctly the EOBD) warning light, I see it almost on a daily basis.

What makes stop start non-functional? battery voltage - neutral switch - clutch switch are the most likely suspects.

Dependant on engine but lengthy startup on Multi-airs brings that up aswell. Mine done it before.

But I didn't think it would bring up "Check Engine" for the clutch switch or the neutral switch though but I suppose thats how fiat has programed them.

Hi i have had the same problem, first on sunday after a 380 mile drive contacted my local dealer they said bring it in had to wait till wed for appointment, but wed morning the fault was gone took car in anyway. was told they couldnt do anything but i could pay for diagnostic tests but they were unsure if that would show fault now it has cleared/self reset so nothing was done.
But on way home from work today fault came back so will be going back to Fiat tomorrow.

Please let me know how you get on and i will post how tomorrow goes.

Hi T14086

You mention a neutral switch , where is it and how easy is it to disconect, and will fieat know tomorrow when they have a look at my car ?

I've had 'stop start unavailable' and it seems to only happen when I have the heating on. However to be honest start stop is pretty useless in my car as I just hold the clutch in when stopped or turn the engine off in long delays on the motorway.

I've had 'check engine' before but afew blurts of the throttle pedal seemed to cure it. Came to the conclusion it was just a little bit of crap in the sensor.

Current message on the dash is 'possible ice on road' (n) Stoopid weather.

i never ended up going to fiat as it was all clear in the morning so will wait for car to play up again.

It happens occasionally with my 500 as well, and although it will reset itself in time, the two warning lights annoying me.
So I went looking for a solution and found that turning the ignition key several times (about 6) in rapid succession without actually starting the engine will reset the system, although it can take a few tries...

Mine did this turned out to be the map sensor out of calibration. Seems any little thing can set this off and unfortunately fiat seem to be the ones who can suss out the problems

You can say you have the same problem, but with two light diagnostic you can not find the cause.
With theses lights, you can only say S&S don't work.
But to find what is going wrong, you have to read the diag code, it can be a dozen of different thing doing this.

Or the best thing, go to you dealer and they check it. They are not only there to sale cars :)
Keep us informed, if it is always the same cause for most S&S problems, next users will have more informations.

The "start & stop unavailable... check engine" + CEL and triangle light came up this morning.

I was driving halfway and felt a loss of engine power. So I anticipated the CEL and messages popping up and it did. I couldn't stop anyhow where I was so I ignored it and continued driving to my destination in limp home mode.

It was the 3rd time it has ever happened to my car.

1st time, it was probably due to the sensors getting wet after an overnight rain.

2nd time, I was cleaning the engine bay and sprayed too much water around the gearbox area. Mine is a selespeed.

3rd time which was this morning, it was again probably due to the overnight rain and sensors getting wet.

In all occasions, the CEL went away after restarting the engine 3 times. The issues were all water related so I believe it was due to one of the sensors controlling start & stop around the gearbox getting wet.

Had the same problem, stop & start unavailable, Check engine. (Punto evo 1.4)

I've just driven 200+ miles, could be something to do with the distance, but I've also seen the warning after trying to pull off in the wrong gear (Be kind, I've only been driving a few months)

Just had a check myself, disconnected the battery and the leads going to the right of the engine (not a clue what they are, I think the ECU or some such) warning lights vanished, and stop/start working again.

I'm going to have my dealership check it over once I get home, will add any information they give me then, and I will also upload a photo showing what I disconnected (and reconnected) just in case it helps someone else.
