Question Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

Hi, My Start Stop system doesn't seem to be working correctly, and wondered if anyone has suffered the same problem as me.
My Punto Evo is currently 6 Weeks old, and the Start/Stop system use to work correctly i.e Cut off for long periods when in traffic, turn of when car is warm and battery fully charged.
Now, it hardly cuts off, even if the car has been running for a long time, even if there are no lights, radio or anything that could drain the battery, it still doesn't work.
Should i be worried, or is this just typical intermittent problem of Fiat Technology?

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

Mine is the same was supposedly updated at last service i only do a spirited 9 miles each way to work so doubt that distance shoves enough charge into the battery to wake the start and stop system up....

there is a list in the hand book of what the car needs to have achieved (up to temperature/ good battery charge/ no air con turned on/ wipers not on etc before the start stop will work

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

Mine's a bit random, works probably 75% of the time and works when the handbook says the system probably won't (headlights, wipers, playing cds etc). I'd suggest if you want to check it works, do 20 mins on a motorway/fast A road then pull over, handbrake on and make sure you put the clutch all the way down when going into neutral. If it still doesn't work then take it into Fiat as it shouldn't cost you anything to get it checked as it is under warrenty.

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

I seem to reading what the manual says, and adapting the things I do in order for it work, and it seems to work occasionally...
I drive about 120miles round trip on the motorways and A-roads about 4-5times a week, and when even then when i am close to my destination in morning rush hour, the start-stop will turn off and then instantly turn back on, or just not work at all.. :s
Think I may have to visit Fiat again, for the 2nd time since I've had the car

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

I have just had my battery replaced after getting fiat to check it out with the computer, there was a cell badly charging so they have replaced it.

I was told that it may take a couple of days for S&S to relearn stuff.

However it was immediately working better and I can now stop at traffic lights longer than 15 seconds...

All under warranty.

Smile Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

My car has covered 7500 since Jan from new and the stop start has worked perfect from day one.As soon as the temp gauge reaches half way (normal)it switches off as soon as I stop. The only time I notice the "stop start unavailable message" is if I am doing a few 3 point turns or sometimes multi storey car park turns etc.I think this is due to the load on the battery caused by the electric power steering and perhaps radio/wipers etc.As soon as I am back on the road at the next stop its working as per normal. It also works when the aircon button is on.

I believe it doesn't come on after you have reversed, but mine has worked since day one. I have had a few bugs where it would turn off like it should, then say its unavailable to turn back on, but this has happened 2-3 times since new.

Hi bu22er,

Not wanting you to lose the will to live or anything but you might want to have a nose through this thread which has been running for a long time on the 500 section.

http://www.fiatforum.com/500/205211-...op-owners.html

There are loads of different variables as to why it may or may not work correctly (they are listed in the manual); some people on there have had new parts fitted to their 500s, others just had a new battery and it started working OK.

In the most extreme examples, Fiat have created job tickets and got the DETs involved to try and sort them out.

It might take a bit of effort but you will see on there how some posters have managed to get theirs sorted.

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

I have been having problems with the stop start since the winter. I have had the car for 2 years and was good as gold until this year. Began to feel like dealers were saying " it's that woman again" everytime I took the car back. Thank goodness in the end the car misbehaved for the mechanics as car would perform nicely for them. They repaired it and all was well for a couple of weeks. Guess what it is going to visit them again this week as stopped working again. Maybe one day this prblem will be resolved.

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

just been ploughing through google about stop start tech after my three day old panda stalled and wouldn't start again at traffic lights. and battery wouldn't turn over. found an rac article that reports that you need to drive twelve km for each stop start in order to replenish the battery. I was going to take it to fiat dealer, but will try with stop start turned off for a few days, as it was partly my mistake, the salesman had told me it was automatically off, that you pressed the dashboard button to turn it on - reading the manual, the opposite applies, it is automaticcally on, so I've been driving around town, doing frequent seop starts, and wandering why it was forever stalling.
All articles talk about a 5% fuel saving - think I;d rather have relaxed and worry free driving, don;t think I;ll do enough miles to lose out on the saving, and my battery might last longer too.

Re: Punto Evo - Start Stop Issues

Your start and stop works until your battery is flat ? There is a problem. System monitor voltage of the battery and current to/from to avoid draining it out.
But like you I dont use this system because I dont travel in city and the stops I do are so shorts... that I dont see the benefice versus usage of battery and starter motor (and alternator)

Hi frazersmum,

Think this could probably do with being posted in the Panda 2012 section.

However, sounds like you've not had much luck at all with your new car. If I were you, I'd definitely be getting the dealer involved. The battery should in no way fail after three days; unless there is a fault with it that has arisen in the meantime, this should have been picked up in the pre-delivery inspection carried out by the dealer. It's probably only going to get worse as winter approaches too, if the battery is weak now then imagine what will happen when temperatures fall below zero...

If the dealer doesn't want to know, then get Fiat Customer Services involved. The salesperson also gave you dud advice too - I have no idea why they would suggest it was automatically switched off?

Anyway, hopefully you will finally enjoy your new Panda - it's a great little car
