Last year - i had the Uniroyal MS plus 6 on the rear of the punto

this year i now have a full set :D

Before winters on the rear, the backside of the old punto and tbh this punto is as well a little light on the backend under heavy braking, as a result it'd happily slide around or wiggle, which is somewhat un-nerving

A slapped a set on the rear as i needed 2 new tyres for the steel wheels, so winters went on :)

I found a big change in more stable braking
Okay i didnt stop quicker, there on rear drums, there crap anyway
But i found it helped no end with stability, even when driving

Going down a snowy hill - no problem, let my weak drums do the gentle braking and grip, while dragging the engine

The punto was alot easier to get down the hill :)

Btw PLus 6 = Smaller width tyres
plus 66 is when you have wider tyres

Hi,
I read MS and thought OK Mud + Snow tread pattern, ( been around for years - were termed Town + Country at one stage IIRC))

but are they softer "winter" compound..??,

there was a FF'er @ "remould" who appeared to be very knowledgeable on tyre design specs.,

Snipe: Not effective at clearing water or snow from under tyres.
With a beak like that though, might not want to upset it.

my alloys have cheap tyres on the front from new - they have a M+S marking

and they are 100% poo in a little bit of wet - let alone in snow or mud....

It wont be long before we are putting them on tho... the is dropping to around 5degs during morning and night, daytime is still too warm tho....

On this topic... apparently we're in for the "worst winter in decades" - so considering winter tyres for the first time. I'm wondering, do I actually NEED steel wheels to go with them, or are they just a nice to have ?

Is there any reason I can't just use my OEM alloys with the correct profile winter tyres, and then have my existing summer tyres refitted ~March ?

Also, any thoughts on these ?

do you really want your alloys bashing and grazing curbs from slipping on ice or snow?
but on the otherhand, does your insurance company class changeing to steelies as an upgrade?
im on steels anyhow and needed new tyres so winters seemed to be a perfect choice for the time of year. will be fitting the first 2 this week sometime. im looking to get some alloys in jan so will put summers on them :)

some one says this about this time every year, i fell for it once and bought a panda 4x4 and that year we had about 1 day of light snow all winter.

but that said you don't need the winter to be the worst in decades to avoid being one of the 6000

"There are 6,393 more accidents involving cars on UK roads in winter than there are in summer, according to Continental Tyres While these can’t all be put down to frozen summer tyres, there’s no doubt that winter tyres reduce the likelihood of an accident and so help keep car insurance premiums down."

If you only have one set of wheels, you have to endure the changeover twice a year. Then either you store the spare set, or pay the tyre company to store them for you. With a spare set of wheels, you can swap them yourself whenever you please. More convenient, unless you don't have the space. Spare steels are usually cheaper than spare alloys.

I haven't hit a kerb yet, even in the snow last year

My insurance company says I can change tyres, but can't change from Steelies TO alloys... but doesn't say i can't change from alloys to steelies. Emailed them to ask their position.

I see your point. With that said, i'm a lazy barsteward and likely wouldn't have the inclination to do it myself anyway. I do have room to store them :)

Think I'll see what my insurance company says RE: fitting steelies, and take it from there.

Thx (y)
