Re: 500 - Girls car?

The reason it is percieved to be a girls car is because its small and 'cute' and men are supposed to be big and tough, therefore drive big tough cars. Historically the 'Man' of the house drove the family car and the 'little woman', if she was allowed a car, had the small one, after all the poor dear does have trouble parking the family waggon (even though thats because shes never allowed to drive it for more than 5 mins or when her man has had a drink). This of course is balonny and more men are realising that you don't have to drive the 'big' car to be a man. Saying this I am in the position that my wife has the family car and I'm buying the 500 for me, although even before its been delivered she is making noises that amount to a bid to 'steal' my 500

Re: 500 - Girls car?

I think it's a unisex car, male and female friendly, certainly didn't cross my mind that it was a woman/man/gay car when I bought one.

However I'm now very butch having traded it in for a mk3 Panda

(which is an old ladies shopping car)

CLS male aged 45 and a quarter.

Re: 500 - Girls car?

Depends on the colour I reckon. The sportier versions give the car a more masculine look. I think the colour plays a part to

Re: 500 - Girls car?

I voted no. I'm totally biased. Love anyone in a 500, guy or gal. Dissertation follows.

Sorry, but when I see one of the Ugly List first thing in the morning (ie cash-cow, juke-puke, evoke-provoke,Q7, X6 etc etc) my face goes "ouch" and my face looks like a sour lemon. Just what you (don't) want when about to get into rush-hour. I've not long been up, you see, so do these owners really have to assult my visual senses with that, this early on in the day? I can hardly believe that they chose that design of their own free will.

I mean, fancy thinking that one of those monsters looked great when you saw it on the forecourt, they all look like the designer had a rough night or a migraine (IMHO... oh whatever) And then I see a 500 go by and go ahhh, that's so much better. I reckon you see, that one Fiat 500 has the visual antidote power for all on my personal Bug Ugly List. I know those small, emaciated, shivering, bug-eyed toy/lap dogs are deemed "cute" by their owners, aren't really, owners have just become familiar with them and see beyond their looks and love them regardless. That I can understand, but the Ugly List in cars, I fail to. How is it possible to feel happy that you've got to get into one. If I were single and a guy had wanted to take me out on a date in a F500 - well, fan-tas-tic! I'd know I'd be having a fun day.

But guys forced to drive them that work for estate agents locally don't think they're a guys car, for sure. I waved about 20 times to the guy in the Hope estate agents white F500 - after a first look of horror he has ignored me totally. So I either ignore him too, or surprise him with a 4 year old's total immersion enthusiam. Still no response, but he's seen me (& probably heard me too, with Electronic 80's going at the mo). He fails to see the bigger picture, that when I move, I shan't be calling up Hope Estate Agents - miserable git of an ambassador they have there. Spotted that Martins Estate Agents, also local, now have two totally vinyl-wrapped blue and green Fiat 500's, one passed in the distance out of waving reach and the other was parked in a car-park visible from the road as we passed. So it remains to be seen if Mr Martin may get some future business from me - or not, we'll see! Locally of course there are guys in Arbaths but I've seen males in black, white, electric blue, that mushroom shade and a Gucci too. None of these guys want to force by me in their 4x4 thingy when there's no room for another 500 to do so even, and nor do 500's carve me up just so they can brake in my stopping distance at the red traffic lights I'm slowing down for, just so they can demo full emergency breaking for me.

A few months before I put my own order in, I saw a Ragamuffin C in a car-park and had to go over and ask the guy loading the boot if he enjoyed the 500 & what he thought of it, as I was saving for one in the same colour myself. He said it was his wife's but it was a great little car and he got to sneak it out occasionally to do a food shop and didn't mind at all as it was a fun little car. I've had guys at work won over and about 25 people have come up to me for a look at one close-up since I've had her - usually when I'm giving the glass a once-over) and they ask for a sit inside!

A 20-something guy I work with told me he'd hired one twice so far, with a group of friends to do a road-trip - and loved it. It was the most basic pop and so he was amazed at the Lounge's features. I think he might actually buy one. My bro-in-law doesn't see cars as anything other than A2B and couldn't give a hoot, drives a beat-up (but reliable) old faded Fiesta - yet he actually said he really likes seeing my car, the chrome detailing especially suits it (and my jaw dropped). So another guy who now fully "gets" why I so desperately wanted one. Fully under the spell of the cute antidote to modern local communting misery.

To me the Fiat 500 is unisex and feels more feng-shui and harmonious than the angled, sharp lines and lights found typically on my Ugly List. It's a total pleasure to own one, and actually makes me smile all the time.

I think guys that would own a 500 see them as a friendly little car and simply think it's a great little design with some love in it. Ever seen "Bondi Vet" on the telly? Friendly, masculine Aussie guy vet, very upset if a bunny patient dies, doesn't care what others think. He wouldn't bash your 500 or kick your puppy. You'd have a fun day out with him and a laugh in a fun little car, so what's not to like about a guy who drives a 500 eh?

My hubby admits he loves my little car too, he washed her for me yesterday and didn't mind at all, he wanted to. I had a fun date and a picnic with him last year in a 500 by the way. It's only Hope Estate Agent guy who's forced to drive one (and looks like he might be capable of kicking your puppy or his family was being held to ransom) that clearly doesn't. Other than HEAG it's great to see guys I've seen around in 500's happily pootling along and chatting away to their usually female passengers. Get that sunny-continent le dolce vita feel (ignore the incessant rain) and get yourself a 500 I say.

There, that's better!

Byeee, toot-toot!

Where's the "It depends on whether it's an Abarth or not" option.

Re: 500 - Girls car?

I would say it's a girls car, just because we Fiat showroom to look at one and none of my boys was far enough for a comfortable sitting position and their spirit to offer the headliner to get.

Re: 500 - Girls car?

I voted yes because the standard 500 is very cute & ladylike but the Abarth 500 is badass!

I'm a girl & I have an Abarth 500. Does that make me badass?? Lol

Re: 500 - Girls car?

Stock (especially convertible) yes, Abarth no, although I'd say it does get manlier as the colour of the car gets darker. Saying that though, I had two girls on separate occasions calling my big Grande Punto 'cute' the other day

Def a girly car! Drives like a girly car too! If you have to ask, then it is!! you'll never hear anyone asking the same about a Ferrari would you!

@curlyone nice essay but can you repeat all of that in a couple of sentences! gave up after two lines...

Re: 500 - Girls car?

I agree with Monty.

If a street was full of cars and I had to walk down it deciding which were owned by men and which were own by women(done this a few times as a bored youth) I'd deffinately say woman when It came to the 500.
