When I get in my Panda after it being left overnight, and take off in first gear all goes well but when the car is under load, briefly a noise which I struggle to describe happens. It goes away and will not come under any other circumstance. No other gear. Even another start up after letting the car temperature fully cool down.

We checked every wheel having jacked the car up. No issues there.

Cornering, speeding, fast gear changes etc. We've tried it all. Gentle take offs. Rough take off. This noise only occurs during initial driving and seems to have no other symptom.

Took it to my uncle, but couldn't replicate the noise. He reckons it can't be anything that bad given how rarely it occurs and how the car drives etc as all being fine.

Anyone able to hazard a guess? Trying to find YouTube videos to show a similar noise. Tried videoing it myself it's not able to be picked up on the mic on my phone sadly.

We all thought you'd sneaked off and hastily purchased a Dacia Sandero and was now living in silent regret.

Anyway, you've ruled out rusty disks cheekily kissing their pads for a few seconds? Cos ours does that like clockwork. After the first braked corner, all gone.

LOL! Perhaps in the future but so far, the Panda life is treating me well. I'm still intending to buy another when I can in many years. I love the car. Sandero perhaps if FCA goes bankrupt haha

It sounds too fast to be brakes to be honest. Something makes me thing it's a gear box issue as -as far as I can tell- it's coming from the front of the car.

Brakes were redone (pads) last august I believe. As for drums, could it be them? Not convinced personally that it's brakes but open to any suggested checks you think I should do?

Get a slight "scuff" noise from front discs on my Panda for first few metres of driving, but only when left overnight. Slightly worse when it has been damp overnight.
Never happens otherwise. Brakes are fine.
Doesn't happen on the other ones though. Mine is the one with newest brakes (Eicher disks & Pagid pads) and they dont look at all rusty.

Sound similar to yours?

Sounds similar

Nope can't think of anything.

Big end is the closest. Worse under load. Often goes away when warmed up. Only thing you would be able describe it as a knocking noise.

Odd noises often come from the aux belt area. Squeaking chirping but can't think of anything that would be worse under load. But again noises can go away offer the bearings warm up.

It's like a high whirling noise, and when you ease off it dies off, like a hoover if could be revved like an engine

Check your aux belt. Adjusted and not oiled up. Normally its a squeal but does stop as you ease off. Ounce the alternator bearings warm up it stops slipping.

Doubt it noise doesn't quit fit

Alternator bearings can do it. When worn they whirl but as they warm the noise stops. It will probably carry on for years but if that is the cause you can fit new bearings or if the case has cracked (they do that as well) get a new alternator.

Eventually the cause will be obvious or it will go away never to return.

My starter is grinding on startup but is fine and has never let me down yet. Would that be anything to do with the alternator or?

I'm aware that's the part that generates a current to charge the battery / power the electronics.

Trying to find videos on YouTube with a similar noise.

God please don't let it be a gearbox out job whatever it is, or develops to be! Ha

Laptop, plug-in microphone and gaffer tap to NS corner one day, OS corner next day. Then under the bonnet. See how it goes.

It's quite high pitched - doesn't sound like a rusty disk but a gently binding front disk.

I'll do that!

Will be in a few weeks however as I've ordered a laptop that's taking 5 weeks from now to arrive!! Lol

I've noticed that when I set off, if I haven't applied enough throttle, the clutch upon take off makes a grinding noise. I had the same thing happen on my old Ford Focus.

Matt.
