Hi all,

Long winded so please bear with!

Recently picked up a 55 plate panda dynamic 1.2 with 63,000 miles on her, car is immaculate with no bodywork issues what so ever. Having 2 small problems, when I got the car on Monday the owner delivered it to me. Normally this would raise suspicions but as I've been really busy and desperately needed another run round I didn't think to much, done all the usual checks and the car was fine. Fast forward to Tuesday morning car wouldn't start, diagnosed shagged battery swapped with a new one all is well. (Bit of a shi**y trick to play but could've been worse) anyway I've noticed the mileage display flashes constantly and has done since I got the car regardless of what battery is on it, also the speedo isn't working. When I'm doing 70 on the motorway it shows I'm doing 15mph. Swapped clocks as I've got a mk2b sat up the path I'm breaking and this made no difference. Diagnosed as gearbox speed sensor...(Mileage also flashed on new clocks). Anyway having put the original clocks back in they're still flashing. Any ideas? Also the car shows I'm doing 11mpg, and says I've got 41 miles till I run out of fuel... despite it having half a tank.

Sorry for the long winded post!

Also giving the mobile app a go! So sorry if this is in the wrong place
Many thanks in advanced :)

Sounds like the Panda might have been sitting for a while. Try disconnecting the battery for half an hour and see if it clears the flashing. It might need proxy alignment.

Have you tried swapping anything else other than the clocks? Have you checked fuses and connectors for signs of corrosion.

I was under the impression that the ECU, immobiliser and instruments are electronically linked.

New instruments can be fitted as the mileage can be increased. But older clocks will cause problems as the mileage can be set back.

Google Fiat Proxy Alignment for the full story.

The speedo issue sounds like a faulty sensor. If it is clogged with metal filings simply cleaning it will help. If it's clean, a new sensor should do the job. Before spending money make sure the connector contacts are all clean.

I haven't mate. Just the clocks, will check all fuses and such later on

Thanks!

Remove the senor on the diff and shine a light through the hole. Check the toothed gear is not damaged and is spinning correctly (not loose)

Is that where the speed sensor is? Was unsure if it's got abs or not so was assuming it was on the gearbox haha

No quite sure where ABS fits in. It would make sense to average the two rear sensors of the speed and do away with the separate speed sensor. At least some Pandas and Puntos with ABS still have a separate speed sensor.

Ah sorry, thought I'd read the ones with abs got their speed from the abs sensor. Ordered a elm327 and got fiatecuscan to see if I can do a proxy alignment to sort the flashing dash, any ideas on why the car says I'm only doing 11.3 mpg? Reset lastnight and done a 10 mile trip no stop start all motorway and I was averaging 12.1 mpg.

Sensing speed form ABS - still quite likely. (y)

poor MPG ,
it KNOWS you've used a "gallon" But THINKS you've covered 10 miles..

The trip MPG is at best a guesstimate and as speedo/odo usually reads fast the trip makes the mpg look better than it really is.

The speedo normally reads fast by design, but the odo is usually much more accurate - mine is within a fraction of a percent when measured against a quality GPS.

The average mpg figure in the MFD is generally optimistic; mine is often 10% better than real world consumption.

The only real way to get a reliable mpg figure is to measure what you put in against the odometer mileage and to verify the odometer accuracy with a GPS.

If your indicated mpg figure begins with a "1", then it shouldn't take too long to figure out whether you have a wildly inaccurate displayed value, or a serious engine problem. Equally, gross errors in the odometer will be obvious on any journey between two points a known distance apart.

Noticed something today, went on a long journey in total about 30 miles, having just filled the car up lastnight I reset my trip to see how far I get from a tank.... anyway having got home decided to flick onto the trip to see how far i had done, and it was telling me 5.2 miles since I'd reset lastnight. Anyway as above the trip I've drove today was about 30 miles round.... not sure where to go with that, have had the negative lead off battery for about a hour, went back out to see if anything was different. Nothing new to report, however did notice a red multi plug dangling by the gearbox on the right hand side (from looking above through bonnet) couldn't quite see where it should be plugged into either...

I cant say what the multiple is for, but a faulty speedo sensor will give a low elapsed mileage. You need to get under the car and check the sensor is not damaged and the wires into the main loom are undamaged. If that all checks out you will need another sensor.

My money would be on the speedo sensor too. Odd that it's failed intermittently; usually they either work normally or fail outright. Seems like yours is recording about one time in five.

I've had a look on ePer and as far as I can tell, the speed sensor is part 46817374 and is, as you'd expect, common to many models in the range (but check the part number stamped on yours before ordering.

New, they're about £50.

UPDATE: that's list; they can be had for much less - see this link.
