quick one what does the warning light inside the rev counter with the car and padlock mean? It lights up yellow. Car is working fine. I got to where I was going, stopped the engine re-started her and no light - was the car checking that the warning light worked?

This light came on on my panda a few months ago, my only thought at the time was that it's for the boot/door locks, though I wasn't sure

Isn't that the light for the antitheft system? I get that sometimes when my key is too long in the ignitionlock before I start. Vanishes on the next start.
If the key is not recognised by the antenna, no fuel (and/or spark) will come. The immobiliser has kicked in.

Cheers chap - engine was on a while as I was de-icing this morning. Good then the light went out on next start up. We have normality!!!!!!
Cheers all.

I get the same thing, very occasionally and with no effect on the car's running; it clears after the next start, and so far I haven't been able to reproduce it. The first time was about a year after I bought the car; it's done it 2, perhaps 3 times since.

Probably a timing issue in the immobiliser circuit if you turn the key at precisely the wrong time. For a Fiat, perhaps best just to regard this as normal behaviour. It's definitely not just you.

The immobiliser has kicked in.

The strange thing is that it hasn't; it's just the warning light telling you it has that kicks in. I guess the immobiliser only stops you from starting the engine; once it's started, the immobiliser won't stop it. So perhaps what's happening in these cases is that the immobiliser is triggering only after the engine has actually started.

Would not worry about it if it clears itself

immobiliser/alarm does not stop the car once the engine has been running. Can't have a car cutting out in a dangerous position

"Car Protection System*FAULT WARNING LIGHT
This car with a lock (Key Code Light) symbol will light up in amber with a message displayed on some Punto versions. This signifies a failure in the engine immobiliser system (Fiat Code System), or if installed on your Punto model, the system alarm will be disabled. An authorised Fiat dealership will need to be contacted to reset the anti-theft system."

so - just to try and get my head around it.. - is this DIFFERENT to the Immobiliser light..??

not helped by the symbols being different on most of my FIAT's.

I guess it's this symbol here:-

I no longer have my Panda but mine did this occasionally too for no obvious reason and no detriment to driving.

Yes different. As I read it the normal one just means the key been read and stay lit if it fails to see the transponder in the key.

The car with a lock through it is a fault with the alarm if fitted or immobilise.

I could be wrong though.

This is the engine immobiliser warning light. I too have this come on sometimes without any notable effect. These things are linked to so many systems, unless you have a fault stored in the ECU it is very difficult to identify what causes it. I have ECU software and have not been able to identify the problem as no fault shows up. It could be as silly as a door not shut properly.... I found turning the car off and onvagain got it to go away and it has not come back on for a long time now. I think the person who thought a computer in a car like a Panda is a B***** idiot. I hope it goes off and away for you soon!!

The cause of that is the system doing checks on itself. This can happen at random when it feels like it but is quite normal and nothing to worry about. I have been on the fiat code immobiliser training course when I was in the dealer so know that's definitley the cause

It can do this if you start the car too quickly without letting it do its checks first. When you turn the key to the first notch, wait a moment before turning the engine on for the ECU to complete its checks.

This happened to me, all I can say is that as I turned the ignition I was accidently pressing the key fob! YEP haven't done since and haven't seen that pesky light!

It tells you that the chip embedded in the key is not recognised by the car's computer. Usually a false alarm, but if your car fails to start one day when this light comes on - then that's the reason,

I hate modern car electronics!

My old 57 reg 100hp used to do this occasionally and switch Sport off at the same time. The dealer carried out a Proxy Alignment on each service which stopped it for a few mojnths but it always came back.

It never failed to start though.
