Where are you moving from? If you have little/no experience of driving in the U.K. Then insurance will be very high and so will the excess

I have no experience of driving in the U.K. sooo give me the K.O. ! :))

I believe a 1.1 active is in the lowest insurance group. Even so the cost for insuring young/inexperienced drivers is pretty brutal.
There are some specialist insurance brokers you could talk to which are listed in the members section.
Where are you from?

I am from Romania ,here i have a Panda....but my mom is owner. But what is the price per y/m ? in Germany is about 100~euro /m (1200 euro/y) start from 0 ,for my age.

In the UK, insurance costs are very dependent on where you live, sometimes down to individual street level. This gives you a summary of how car insurance premiums are calculated.

This link will give you an indication of how motor insurers view the risk associated with a particular postcode.

Both London and Luton will be relatively expensive.

If you're young and inexperienced, the difference between the different engine sizes could be significant; if you're an old git with 10yrs no claims history, you can insure a 100HP for pretty much the same price as a 1.1.

Entering a few details into any of the comparison websites will soon give you an indication of what to expect.

but my mom is owner

In the UK, premiums are determined by the person who is the main driver, not the owner. Stating that your Mom is the main driver when it is in fact yourself is known as 'fronting' and is a serious criminal offence which will invalidate your insurance and lead to heavy penalties if you are caught.

Having had fairly recent experience of trying to find reasonably priced insurance for an 18 year old new driver, (I just found my notes) there are a few suggestions when searching...
3rd party rarely seems to be any cheaper on a Panda. Don't know about riskier cars, but some Panda quotes were actually more expensive. Wierd!
Any modifications seem to make a big difference. Even a set of Seicento alloys - a couple of insurers refused to quote at all. Totally standard is definitely better.
Black Boxes (telemetrics, pay-as-you-drive) may be cheaper, but not always. And may have time restrictions.
Parked-on-road costs quite a bit more than parked-in-locked-garage. But the definition of a garage seems to be different for many of the insurers. My "barn" was acceptable to some but not others. Parked-on-driveway was in between, but some wanted locked gates to make any difference to the price.
Be honest. It is not worth trying to "optimise" the information you provide. It appears that they make more efforts to check the information you gave if there is a claim when you are a young driver.
Most seem to have at least £250 compulsory excess. Some are £500. Or more.
Paying up front is usually much cheaper. The monthly option may add £100 or more.
Hope that helps.

Not sure if you are looking at new or used but in my recent experience getting a brand new car can actually be cheaper if you can find one with an insurance deal.

In our household we used to only have one car which was registered to my wife and I was a named driver. When I needed to get a car I was about 25 and didn't have any no claims discount because I was only a named driver. Insurance quotes were around the £1,000 mark. Because of this I bought a brand new Polo on PCP, which at the time included a years free insurance. As the insurance was worth over £100 a month the car was almost free for the first year. Going into year two I had a years no claims so the insurance almost halved. With no MoT and only basic servicing required the total cost of ownership over the 3 years was pretty similar to buying a second hand car.

After the 3 years I got rid of it and bought a second hand Panda, by which time by insurance was down to well under £350.

Best advise is to shop about. In the UK insurance is a personal based contract, and as such prices will vary from one person to another on an identical car, based on their experiences and locations etc.

Not necessarily so. Some insurers will recognise overseas NCD earnt / driving experience.

Best thing is to try a comparison website. I keep a special email address for these things to avoid spamming my main email address.

:yeahthat:

"third party only" is the common basic policy;)

As above, its the lowest level of cover available, but not always the cheapest.

The f**k ...6000 ....they give me a new Panda ? or ?for a future stundent+ work,GOD ...6000-7000 per year

I don't understand..?
is that £6000 for a years insurance..

not too ridiculous in the UK insurance business:(

my nephew was quoted £3,500 for a small FIAT,

got a small motorcycle insured for £350 , then had a years "no - claims" ,
so got the next years car policy under £2k

Ouch!
Have you tried any of the specialist brokers? Some insurers actually have real people to speak to, rather than call centres who can only use a script. Although the only one I found who gave useful information was called Adrian Flux. They seem to specialise in unusual cars, but could be worth a call.
Most insurers had to refer me to a supervisor before they could answer a fairly simple question that wasn't answered on their on-screen script.

Driving will soon be way way way to expensive for young drivers
They'll end up having to wait till 25 before they can get Reasonable insurance....

The UK prices seem stupidly high vs other places.... But we are turning out to alot bloody trump country - Where there is a blaim... there is a claim

Different versions of a vehicle always been extreme's
Take a 2000 Fiat Punto 1.2 8v - I would be say like 450 a year
Swap to a 2004 Fiat Punto 1.2 8v Active Sport (Same car, same engine, just alloys and different bumpers) My insurance Shot up by £150 - £200.... annoyingly

Ziggy

But when you come to Britain, you'll presumably have an address here and will buy a RHD car in the UK in your own name - this should get you a more resonable quote, though it may still be several thousand euros for the first year. In your circumstances, a 1.1 Panda will be one of the cheapest cars to insure.

IIRC EU residents can drive in the UK indefinitely on an EU licence (well at least until you're age 70).

Check this link for more details on UK licence requirements.

It's close, until the UK government actually begins to regulate the industry and claims tighter then it's going to go out of control.

I've bought a 1.2 GP for £2k when I started. Value of car is average £1,000, and my insurance was £2,800.

The value of a car is irreverent however, its the potential third party claim element which is considered in the main. Not helps with the likes of credit hire organisations and solicitors with their legal fees on some relatively minor injury claims in a lot of cases.

These are the areas that need regulating to be completely honest.
