Hi, '05 1.2 petrol 4x4, parked car up at night, no issues but would not start next morning. Turning over with good battery but refuses to fire/start. Code reader shows no faults, timing belt OK, plenty fuel, no other warning lights etc showing. What should be my first port of call?

mechanic tells me the fuel pump is U/S, will find out tomorrow hopefully when new one fitted.

Presumably he has tested for crank sensor faults. Just to rub salt, what is the cost of a fuel pump compared to a new crank sensor?

DaveMcT My fuel pump went last December, ended up paying £140 for a brand new Bosch one. The OEM Siemens one was around £280 ish and personally I thought Bosch's guarantees and quality might be better - though I'll probably never know.

We figured this out as if you got under the car and 'punched' the fuel tank, it would start up and idle fine then die out as you stopped / tried to drive.

My car died whilst driving.. literally it went dead, then as I naturally went to accelerate the more I pressed the pedal the more 'dead' it felt, until eventually choking out and refusing to start. You could hear a powerful and repetitive 'charge' as it tried hard to start, literally was found to be lack of fuel supply.

Once the new pump was fitted (20 min job - easy stuff) allen keys, bit of wood, hammer.. Turned the car on (ignition only) to prime the pump, started first time. No bother since.

* hope this helps OP

Wrong pump came, apparently 6 to choose from and this one matched my Reg, fitted the hole but was much shorter :-( Bank Holiday weekend has halted proceedings.

I know how you feel, my car broke down in mid December, spent the whole Christmas period without a car, miserable! Especially as my dad bought the car for me as a Christmas present from another relative!!! Everyone was back home from uni and we couldn't get any good drives or trips done.

Would it help if I found the part number for you or are you on your way to being sorted now?

Thanks, that might help indeed.

Well that's 5 weeks gone now, had 3 pumps home and ALL too short :-(
Mechanic and supplier have"cross referenced" reg + vin but having no luck so help needed.
The problem is the replacement is about 3inches too short so will only suck about half the tank.
I haven't seen the new pumps personally but anyone had this problem before??

Will be worth a look, seen a YouTube video replacing an sorted pump that didn't look too difficult.

This is the exact part I bought OP, and it works a charm to this day.

That's where I got it, it was about £140 but I paid it as in my opinion it's a crucial component.

Personally if anything happens my Panda, I'll put the old one back in and salvage this, for my next Panda or sell it on to someone on the forum. That way, I won't 'waste' the money.

Hope this helps, you can also go to Bosch website (or any other pump maker) and use their catalogue to find their part number for the FIAT PANDA of your spec - that's what I did.

I have seen a YouTube video changing the pump only but don't know the part number. If the saga continues I am going to find a pump from a scrapper and see about swapping bits over, can't be much worse off than now.

That would always be my first move though obviously avoid anything with high miles or a seller who doesn't know the mileage its done.
