Yes, it's a Panda related post, not a lecture on the economy that I have no clue about :D

So around December time I may have a total of about £300 to spend and why not spend it on my beloved Fiat. Originally I was thinking of things like speakers and radio upgrades but I've silenced 'the inner chav'...

Considering on some practical, service upgrades that will keep the Panda in tip top shape in the next few years. The question is, how exactly.

Some ideas I'm thinking are the likes of a new battery, not that it needs done but it will sooner rather than later, the small things like that that I 'should do while I can'. Can't think of much more, other than service items so perhaps them too.. oil, filter, air filter, coolant change etc but still leaves a hefty remainder of £300 left.

What would be some wise things to buy and do to the Panda that are practical?

I ask you as you have all owned cars for much longer than me, obviously know more wisely than a 20 year old on what is a 'need' and a 'want' haha

The wisest person would keep the money aside and not fix what's not broken. Then, if something does go awry you have funds.

Agreed. Perhaps at least half of that will add to the 'Car Fund'.

I've recently started putting £20 a week away to accommodate the future unexpected repairs and costs.

So far, in less than a year of ownership I've been hit by a bad fuel pump (£140), nail in tyre (£50) etc which I just about got through! I vow to have the money in the future to power through these situations

Keep the oil and water in good condition and you'll probably wear the seats out first, so a set of covers maybe?

The clutches on small Fiats are fairly flimsy so don't be surprised if it goes some time, but a light car with one occupant shouldn't stress it too much.

Worst case the head gasket might go eventually but if you don't cook the engine it's straightforward.

My two biggest fears, other than the rust which I've calmed down about are the head gasket and major transmission failure.

Am I right to think these things can be dealt with when they happen?

I plan to keep the car for the next 4 years if I should be so lucky.

Would it be worth re-doing the head gasket as a precaution when I can get the stuff or is this just silly given the risks I could create vs. the risk of it ever happening?

I plan on by year end having a £600 pool of cash to set right anything major. Exceeding that, and economically it's probably going to be looking for a new car.. as much as I hope that never happens.

Fiat wanted £240 to fix a flywheel seal, wondering if next year I should get that done plus ALL minor rubber components on the engine that I could add for a few more quid and get them to do it - all warranty covered - whilst I was paying for the labour?

Just some ideas, need your feedback to go through with any but!
