Hi all,...again!.
Been having problems with my 05 panda not starting on occasion and showing the 'Engine failure' message.
For some explicable reason I thought putting 97% octane in might improve things in that department.
Only improvement is performance( slightly)
Worst thing is now my exhaust smells like rotten eggs which I guess keeps the tailgaters away  and the engine, when hot, runs rough when idling.
Before I did this the car there was no issue with the exhaust fumes :yuck:

My question is, have I killed the cat? worst case scenario I guess but that's supposed to turn the sulphur onto an odourless gas
Otherwise will the car return back to normal when the rich fuel is spent and normal fuel is back in the system?

when was the last MOT / emissions test.. what were the figures..??

Sulphur smell is unburnt fuel in the cat, f it's running rough in inclined to say you have an ignition misfire (you know the injector works...) I'd advise against driving it too much, as the more you use it the more you'll damage the cat. When was the last spark plug/ignition lead change?

I remember my mum owning a KIA Picanto 1.1 LX (2004) from new. We only kept it for 12 months before my mum sold it on to purchase a larger car. Within that short amount of time, the vehicle only covered short journeys, less than a mile, yet we smelt sulphur (rotten eggs) on almost every time.

The car she replaced it with, a Xsara Picasso 1.6i was also used for short journeys and low and behold, the smell of sulphur could also be smelt!

A quick blast on the motorway cured the smell and that lasted a few weeks before the limited use resulted in the smell returning. Do you use the car for incredibly short journeys?

Matt.

Ive no information of emission results BUT a VOSA report states that back as far as 2011 the exhaust system has been in some sort of state of deterioration.

2 weeks ago I thought id replaced this 'deteriorated ' system but not was made aware of the severe rust on the cat! I guess this is ready to be replaced as well :-(

I'll see how things go when ive finally got the 'god stuff' out the system and see how it goes but whatever happens the cat is in need of replacing anyway.

Thanks for saying that as that will be my next port of call regardless of what happens BUt after seeing the poor external state of the cat today it's going to be replaced, expensive I know but at least i'll know it's been done and not covered up by the shark that sold it to me in the first place!

OH P.S...only slightly rough on tick over otherwise runs ok with good average MPG at 46mpg

car is running better and a lot less smelly now I'm driving 15 miles to work instead of the 2 I normally do each way so short running must also be an issue!

Picture taken after my 15 jaunt back home today
