hello,
For the last 2 weeks there is tick/tap noise coming from what i presume is the the front of the car. Its exactly the same noise you get when there is a stone stuck in the tread.
It starts of slow and increases with road speed. I have had all wheels off, tyres are clean. I have checked brakes, covers and for anything flapping in arches, all is fine.

So, any ideas what it could be or? or what else i could check. Obviously i could keep the window closed or turn radio up, but now its there its bugging me.
Thanks in advance.

Is it like a clicking noise over bumpy roads? If so I would presume it is your drop links.

My first guess would be a dry or failing CV joint so try driving it slowly on full lock both ways and see if the noise changes or gets worse, also worth checking your brake discs to see if they might be warped or badly fitted, jack up/remove wheel and spin the disc to see if its rubbing or catching on the pads.
If it checks out fine on the above then next thing to check might be the wheel bearing which would normally show up as a rumbling sound but its worth checking, also check the large hub nut in the middle of the disc is tight.

What wheels do you have fitted? Have seen in the past with aftermarket alloys the centre cap coming loose

the are the standard alloys. Checked them today all caps fine.

What would i be looking out for with CV joint. up to 30mph not noticeable. if i turn left the noise seems louder. If i spin the wheel by hand there is no extra noise in regards to brake disk. Wheels have been shook no movement. The hub nut seems fine, it has bits that fit in a groove.
Happens in gear aswell as out. It does seem to go away after car as warmed up, unless my mind blocking it out.

It could be that one of the bearings in the CV joint is slightly damaged and quietens down when the grease gets warm around it, i'd remove the cv boot clips, slide it back on the drive shaft and pack some new grease in then refit with new clips and see if it improves.

Might sound daft, but how about the balancing weights on your wheel being a touch too big and knocking off the brake assembly? Happened me once.

Just an update. only just got around to putting some grease in. I have added some more grease to both outer cv boots. wouldn't say they were dry with the amount drooping when i slid the boots back. Anyway seems to of worked but il see how it goes.

Also whats with the shelf thing at the top of the wheel arch behind spring?. I have cleaned out alot of crud and stones. Some sort of drain?.

Its a neat little rust trap but doesn't seem to cause any problems with actual rust, I clean it out once a year and drown it in wd40.
