Hi All,

Car has been running funny these last few days. When starting from cold car seems to have a massive flat spot for several seconds then runs fine.

Once the car is warm it seems to be okay, plugged car in and the error code is coming up as P0101, I have siliconed up the screw and all appears dry under there.

Would this be a faulty MAF? If so, should I buy a genuine Bosch or can I buy a third party part or a bosch one from breakers? Would a faulty MAF Sensor cause a flat spot when the car is cold and slightly lumpy idling?

Finally, how unearth do I get the funny jubilee clip thing off?

Thanks,

Cameron

Yep, that code and a few others like P0102/3/4 are all related to a malfunction with the Maf.

One quick way of confirming this is to unplug the Maf connector. No need yet to remove the Maf itself.

Run the car with the Maf unplugged and see if there is any difference. If the Maf really is faulty you might find that, at low revs anyway, the engine runs smoother without it. Mafs can be cleaned easily with care, so you might not even need to replace it. Plenty of Youtube videos on cleaning Mafs.

Thanks for the reply, just had a look and despite me siliconing around the screw water is still dripping throught the screw hole. Do I need to pull the little patch of foam off and then silicone around the screw and plastic tab? The air filter isn't wet but I assume the water is dripping on electric cables at the back of the engine?

Thanks

That can kill your engine if water does get into / past filter .Id sort it out ASAP .

I took both the screw and the nylon fitting it screwed into completely off, then covered the hole with a small piece of aluminium (cut from one of those cheap tv meal tins) using double-sided tape. Over a year ago now, and it's still good.

Siliconed the screw hole up so hopefully it's sealed now tried running the car tonight with the maf disconnected seemed smoother to drive and when idiling but still tons of smoke when flooring it, I assume because it can't adjust the air to fuel ratio? My next question is if everyone things it's the MAF that's duff would you buy a third party unit, New Bosch or one from a breakers?

Thanks

Yep, the excess smoke is probably for the reason you say.
If you buy a replacement, go for oem maf. But I would have a go at cleaning yours first - not too difficult.
One way is to get some brake cleaner (aerosol) and spray directly into the maf - with air filter pipe disconnected - as the engine is running. It often is enough, but if not take off the maf and soak it in meths, juggling it about to help clean the wire filament inside.

Thanks for the info, I can see the maf is held on with two 10mm bolts but how do I take the metal clip off ?

One side springs out of the other side. Hold one side with pliers and spring the other side sideways.
They're a right pain to get back on, but just possible. I broke mine, because I had my maf off several times. Not a big problem - I now hold it all together with a cable tie.
