Ok so I have a 2010 1.2 panda eco dynamic just under38k miles.
Over last couple months told I need fr wheel bearings which i had done only to be told it's diff bearings worn and I need recon gearbox and possibly clutch at £1200 does this sound right for diff bearings to ware??
I noticed today when idle there is a noise but when I press clutch in noise goes.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks

I had noise which sounded like a aeroplane whilst driving, garage told me wheel bearings although there was no play in either wheels!!

nope there is still a noise plus driving over 50mph I now get a hollow type sound which has only been since wheel bearings changed.

The noise you have at idle that changes when you press the clutch in sounds like the clutch release bearing or possibly a damaged or badly worn friction plate or cover... worse case scenario with this is that the gearbox needs to come off to have a look and possibly new parts as above, i'd say about £150 for parts plus the labour so nowhere near £1200.. the hollow sound following wheel bearing replacement sounds a lot like either the bearings don't have enough grease on them or something is going on with the brakes.. did the garage replace the discs or pads?

I'm in Harleston norfolk, I'm taking it first thing tomorrow for a second opinion as I'm worried about driving it garage who told me diff bearings worn said the gearbox could seize up at any point ?.
I had new front brake pads back in April as an mot fail that they were 75% worn.

same garage? if it passed brake test it should have been an advisory not a fail. they should state how much left in mm for a fail and has to be less than 1.5mm

The head det in norwich fiat dealers is very good, may be worth asking if he could take car for a spin, noises are hard to diagnoses over the internet but some one like him should identify it in no time.

Was a main fiat dealer who failed it on the brakes.
I did speak to them about diff bearings worn but they want £98 an hour to look at car which in my opinion is a lot.
I'm really hoping it is the clutch bearing rather than the gearbox, guess I will find out more in the morning.
Thanks for advise thou is helpful.

I think it's already been mentioned, but the noise on operating the clutch pedal is the clutch thrust/release bearing, often known as a CSC. (concentric slave cylinder)

It's very common for this bearing to growl or chatter as everything starts to get coated and caked in clutch dust.

It's no big deal, never had one fail and as the noise comes and goes when the wheels are NOT turning, it has nothing to do with wheel bearings or gearbox.

Your other, rotation related noise is more of an issue.
You've had the wheel bearings replaced and the brakes done and if they were done properly, you'd think that would rule those out.

But it's possible a "whooping" noise at speed could be a brake caliper binding.
You'd notice a hot wheel after a drive out if one were sticking on or it won't roll freely on a slight incline.
The noise can be quite misleading, I've just identified one on my lads C2 as it soundslike all four wheel bearings were grinding away and the inside of the car booms!

Another possibility is a worn drive shaft, there are two joints on each shaft, the outer joints tend to click and clack when worn, the inner joints tend to wobble about and whoop, quite often with a bit of vibration at speed, like a wheel out of balance.

They aren't easy to check, you would need to get under with the wheels on the ground and rattle them up and down to see if they flop about.
Another tell tale is jacking the car up and rotating the wheel back and forth while holding the inner joints casing, if the wheel/shaft rotate more than a few inches before the joint locks up (and starts rotating in the gearbox) then the joint is worn out.

Unless there's evidence of oil loss from the gearbox, I would not be tempted to jump to the conclusion it's a gearbox fault, especially if it selects gears ok.
Sure they can and have broken down, but there's usually a good cause that's easily spotted.

As you're out of warranty, I would try and take it to a gearbox specialist.
They will be very familar with driveline noises and what causes them.
