Hey guys

I've got an odd sound coming from my 100hp engine. I've only had the car a week and not noticed it before.

The only way I can think to describe it is it makes a kind of "whup whup whup" like noise.

I noticed it first time this morning when the engine was cold and idling at 1100rpm. Once the engine warmed up I couldn't hear it anymore.

However, when I just got home from work I could hear it again as it came down the revs.

I took a video and posted it on youtube...

Anyone got any ideas as to what this could be? To me it sounds like its coming from underneath the plastic cover which could suggest the cambelt? It was changed just before I got the car so I'm hoping it isn't that.

I'm still in warranty with the garage but would like to try and discover the problem before hand.

If it is a problem? maybe I'm just being paranoid? I'm guessing not though, it does sound a bit weird.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Dom

Hmm, interesting.

I do think it sounds like a belt noise. Or could it be water pump? Was the water pump changed with the cambelt change you mention?

I would get it checked out.

When my aux belt was going I had a kind of similar noise to that at idle... But more...idley. Not as whumpy.

If you reach in and very carefully turn the aux belt around a bit you'll be able to see the condition of it, be gentle. Just to rule it out kinda thing.

Hey MC, thanks for the reply man

Yeah first thing I thought was "That sounds like a belt".

I contacted the dealer who sold me the car today and they got the garage that fitted the cambelt to call me. It's booked in on Tuesday so hopefully all sorted soon.

I'll let you know how I get on mate.

Thanks again :)

Cool, fingers crossed it's something minor :)

Well the garage had it last tuesday, took the belt off and had a good look around. They couldn't find anything at fault and suggested that because the belt was brand new and had only done 200 miles, it could take some time to "bed in".

The dealer said come back in a month if its still making the same noise and they'll replace it with an official Fiat cambelt and waterpump.

Sounded reasonable to me so I accepted that and will keep my ear on it.

A belt doesn't need bed-in.

Just make sure when you go back the warranty (every dealer must give a certain amount of warranty if I am not mistaken?) hasn't expired.

Cheers fpan... I have to admit it sounded strange to me, but unfortunately with such little car knowledge, I'm at the mercy of these guys.

However, fortunately I have 3 months warranty and they said come back within a month so I'll definitely still be in warranty at that point.

To be fair, the dealer has been very good to me about this so far. Maybe hoping the belt will sort itself in a month is wishful thinking on his (and my) part but he has made it clear that he will sort it if the noise is still there in a months time which I think is fair of him.

The noise isn't as loud anymore, but it is still noticeably there.
