Needle was bouncing off the bottom of the gauge again, and I just managed to squeeze in 37.722 litres. And at that it still wasn't overflowing out of the filler neck.

Either I'm very silly or very brave.

And make sure the pumps have been recently calibrated and ask to see their certificate!

Now, when the fuel warms up and expands in the tank it will run out of the overflow onto the road and you will have wasted your money.

The fuel system is designed to operate with an air space in the tank and filler system when filled correctly.

The handbook clearly states that you should not attempt to fill the car beyond the point when the fuel pump automatically cuts off and warns specifically against dribbling fuel into the tank beyond this point.

Nominal fuel system capacity is 35litres - dribbling it in until it comes out of the filler neck will supposedly get you about another 7 litres in, and if you are unlucky, a bill for £1000+ for replacing the evaporation control components. Getting a significant quantity of liquid fuel (especially diesel fuel) into the activated charcoal evaporation canister will likely ruin it.

Some folks here have been overfilling their tanks for years without apparent issues, but at least one person has had an expensive bill. Ultimately, it's your car, and your choice, but the manufacturer's warning is absolutely clear.

I had my gauge go pretty much to the bottom the other day (not intentionally...found myself a bit..lost, had to go a few extra miles to get to where I was heading) and it took just over 32 litres.

I'm too much of a wuss to see how much I can put in. Have ran out of fuel twice previously when trying to be 'clever' (in previous cars, years ago)

Not worth it :p
