General Had an incident....

Sorry to hear this, Matt.

A similar thing happened to me in my last car (Yaris)

A Golf pulled into a centre part of the road, waiting to pull into 'my' lane. (two lane road with a grass verge in the centre)

I was aware that he could pull out (use this road daily and some people do) so I always cover the brake slightly...be extra aware..

Anyway, several seconds later - literally as I was virtually right on him, he pulled out! Like..how could he not have seen me?!

I braked hard and pulled over to the right, bouncing up onto the grass verge, he didn't speed up, so I actually bounced alongside him, composed myself, and looked across, he saw me and backed off, so I actually rejoined the road in front of him. I signalled for him to stop in the layby...which I did...

Did he stop? Did he hell.

Anyway, somehow, there was acutally no damage to the Yaris (tough car...) so I was lucky, but it could have been so much worse (either for my, or both our cars)

I know if I had hit him, I would have hit the rear of his car, so it probably would have been classed as my fault!

It's crazy that you can buy an entire 100HP for the cost of 4 new wheels and tyres, it's nearly worth getting a spare just to pull parts from! As a side note, someone must have really loved driving their 100HP to put over 120,000 miles on it !

I'm not sure a dashcam would have helped on this occasion. It would have shown the other car to be at fault, but I don't think it would have seen his/her numberplate as they came at me from the side. I've thought about getting one before and I think I might need to have a read of the big dashcam thread over on Pistonheads.

Thanks for all the links and advice, too. It's nice to have some support and understanding from fellow 100HP enthusiasts :). As some of you have said, at least both me and (most of) the car are okay. Fiat have had it up on the lift to check for any other, unseen damage and, thankfully, they didn't find anything.

Now I've had a night to sleep on it, I'm glad I went for the curb, not the other car. It might have been cheaper to pay my insurance excess than it is to buy a new wheel and tyre, but as AB100 experienced, I could have been hurt in a way that would cause me way more than £250 worth of inconvenience and discomfort.

Gtidriver, there's always one, isn't there :p? I was not speeding and even if I had have been, it's not like a was riding a motorbike bike at 100mph+ and arrived in a flash. There was absolutely no excuse for the other driver not seeing my car. You're definitely right, we have all made mistakes when we're driving, but pulling out onto a main road without looking, or without looking sufficiently, is a pretty monumental error.

Whenever I get close to anything in the Panda, its 3* NCAP and its short bonnet play on my mind.

As you say though, at least I'm okay and the Panda can be fixed. I was pretty shook up though, I've never been in an a accident before.

glad you're o.k., :)

probably the better of the impact scenarios ..,

wasn't the 3 star N-cap for non airbag equipped base models..??

YES - £500 for a wheel + tyre is daft.., can run my 1.1 active for a few years on that..

Thanks mate, you don't know how much it means to hear some kind words.

As I said, I've never been in a car accident before and it shakes you up more than a bystander would imagine.

I'm glad I'm okay, just annoyed that I've got a £500 bill that I don't deserve.

is it only one alloy ?? There's a few 100hp being broken on eBay.

and I dont dwell on the accident too much. you learn. I for one wouldn't like to be sitting in the panda hitting the Audi at 40mph.... I can imagine it wouldn't be a pretty sight.

so get the alloys sorted and get back on the road and enjoy the car.

Cheers :).

Out of interest, I just had a look at the Panda's NCAP score and video. The test was conducted on a 1.2 model with only one airbag, which came out of the steering wheel.

Here's the video of the test if anyone fancies a look at how a Panda holds up in an accident:

My T-bone was in a Cinquecento at around 30mph. Head first into the side of another car (yes, he was in the central reservation and turned right in front of me......). No airbags (now you know why modern cars have knee-airbags).

On the plus side, the compactness of the car meant that my right knee absorbed most of the impact as it made it's way up my leg in splinters, along with my forehead punching the windscreen clean out. It was suggested that a larger car would have allowed much more space for my spinal vertebra to completely have fractured, probably meaning I wouldn't be here explaining the difference between a crash test and a crash incident.

Happy days.

lots of slagging off of audi drivers here, maybe the op was driving too quickly and the audi driver didn't see him. We will never know. Over on a audi forum there's someone telling a story of how he had pulled out on someone and they had binned it because they where driving to fast.
Get a dashcam for next time.

Because they are knobs.

I think you'll find its the "Im pulling out, might is right" lorry and bus /coach drivers that are the worse drivers. Maybe your a breath of fresh air and one of the better ones:)
Im one of the other motorists favourite drivers, A BMW driver.

I actually find your knob comment quite offensive, my wife had an Audi A3 she's not a knob:( my best mate has had 2 R8s, he's not a knob, two neighbours have Audis neither are knobs, admittedly one can't drive for ****:) if you saw a fiat driver being a knob would you let them off as they are driving a fiat?

Back on topic, op where did you get £500 from??? A wheel from fiat is £300 and a Goodyear oem tyre is £75. £25 for tracking after.

As I say to everyone who has an opinion on HGV drivers... have a go in a 44 ton artic in busy traffic, see what you can see from the drivers seat then report back to me, and yes I am defending a fellow fiat owner on a fiat based forum.

Your defending a person that gave a one sided version. Always fancied a go at hgv, if I was single that would have been my chosen profession, I'd love to have been a continental driver.
genuine question that I'd like you to answer please. Why when two lorrys are over taking will the inside lane lorry never yield? The over taker is trying to do just that, surely just lifting off the go pedal for just a second would allow the overtaker to pass. Over the years I've been stuck for miles and miles due to this.

A lack of manners in an nutshell, contrary to what people think not all lorry drivers respect their own so to speak and as the majority of large fleet operators are limiting their vehicles to 50-52mph for better fuel economy we are all going pretty much the same speed regardless of the engine size/weight on the trailer.
The general 'rule' is that if someone pulls out on a motorway to let you join you then let that truck pass you and then flash him/her in, if someone is overtaking then you should back off when that person's cab passes yours..... not everyone practises this hence why your stuck behind them... I know its annoying and I try not to do it if that helps.
