Hi , have a 58 plate 1.2 eleganza. The engine warning light and "engine failure" message came up today, combined with the car running roughly or 'lumpy'. I looked in manual and under bonnet, no obvious issues, had new plugs recently too. I'm suspecting some electrical gremlin, possibly ECU related. Any pearls of wisdom or anything obvious I can do before going to local garage? I don't have a code reader and not sure I could operate one anyway:eek: Cheers, John

Check the plug connections.

but would advise grab a cheap eBay code reader. less than 20 and it will pay for itself on its first use. Really easy. Just plug and play.

my eml came on with rough running. turned out to be forget plug on cylinder 2.

Fiat wanted 90 plus vat for just diagnostic check

All 'modern' engines are electronic to one degree or another, so voltage sensitive, so I would be taking the battery off and giving it a good overnight charge, even if it's only part of a process of elimination. What have you got to lose?

Hi All, thanks for comments, it was one of the coils after all, local chap diagnosed and replaced so all hunky dory now. Made me think though should they both be replaced as logic might suggest that the other one may fail or are these things more random? How tricky is it to do the change as I was thinking of getting a spare. Cheers, John B
