The two white bits should be fixed to the lens as shown, and pop into two matching fittings on the bodywork.
Sometimes they get left in the bodywork - especially after the lens has had a bang. If so, mole grips and a strong jerk should pull them free.
Otherwise as has been said - they serve to locate the lens, which is also secured with obvious self-tappers.

I found it required lots of pulling and cursing. That was followed by lots of shoving and leaning on it and cursing to get it back on. :D

Silicon spray helps with getting it back on.
Right pain in the tail-lamp it is!

Sure, I will take a picture and post it.
Didn't do it today as I want to mount my new brake discs first

Once you know what is behind it's really OK.
But before that you are scared to use brute force like that on your car!

Basically each of those white things has a white ball at its end that has to come out of its respective socket on the body.

The only real important thing to know is this:
When you pull, don't hold it only from below like I did or you will break the uppermost part of the taillight plastic (see http://i.imgur.com/PcLB5JK.jpg)

I had to replace it anyway so np.

The taillight was full of nasty Narnia creatures such as spiders, dead wasps etc.

I put some WD40 in the sockets before snapping the taillight back into position.
Is there anything in your car where you can't use it? I love it :p

Glad that worked out OK.
I fitted a tow bar, and took both lights off to sort out the tow bar electrics. Next time will be a doddle.
