It would not be advisable to leave the top bush loose with only axial loading by the bolt to stop things from moving. If any movement takes place, then things will get loose quickly. Even a plastic tube between the bolt and the bush bore would suffice. The tube should be slightly shorter than the shock bush.

Yes, ideally a spacer tube should be used but I couldn't find any in the hardware store I went and other people have used them without without problems.

Let me know if/where you find a tube with internal diameter 10mm and external 12mm, if you can can a spare set for me we can share the costs.

Thanks.

Thanks, ordered!

On another note, I fitted the front Konis on Sunday and the car has been transformed.

The rears by themselves helped but the car wasn't uniform, I recommend to anyone replacing the shocks to do all 4 and not just the rears.

This is exactly what i didn't want to hear. means more money.

Did you fit sports or str. t up front. Did you do it yourself

out of interest what is the mileage on your car. just want to know if the change is due to tired std shocks

Mine is a 2010 car with 23k

I did the rears on the driveway first (it took around 2.5h), then last Sunday we rented a DIY garage that has a ramp and did the fronts with the help of a friend.

The fronts took me ~5h (a lot of the time was spent chatting though).

My main problem was removing the top mounts and springs from the old shocks, you need a 27mm deep impact socket which we didn't have and because the shallow socket didn't fit we had to cut the metal rod on the top where the allen key fits to be able to use the shallow socket.

Another problem is how to torque the top mount bolts as the stanchion rotates and you can only hold it so much by hand.

Any ideas?

I lowered the car on the ground and it helped a bit with the car's weight but I was not able to torque them up to 60Nm, only ~35Nm.

The rear shocks had already been replaced at around 20k by the previous owner as the top bushes had perished.

I fitted the Konis (yellow ones) at 37k.

My original shocks had bags of damping in them at 65000 miles but they got binned because all the springs were very rusty, the top steering bearings were shot and I only had the energy to do the job once.

Well it looks like it won't be a job I'd be taking on myself then. I will just change the fronts to str.t dampers when required.

for now let's see how I get on with just the rears.

The car still floats on certain tarmacs with the yellows on the softest setting, I bought mine second hand from a member on here but they had only done 3k miles or so (they look like new).
I am going to tighten them half a turn and see how the damping is.

The SS inserts for the rear arrived today :).

Did my rear this morning. Easy as. Only thing that required me to run out to the shops was me blunting the first hacksaw blade and having no spares.

the eBay tube is perfect for the job as the picture shows.

whilst the shocks were off I was able to remove the broken bump stop on the drivers side.
now only has one but once the other one brakes I wont replace it as I go so slow over speed bumps anyway and rarely carry passengers in the rear other then my kids.

going to give the str. t time to bed in but initial impressions are there is a slight improvement.

here is a pic I quickly took. shows how poor the top Bush is finished off by koni. the additional Bush is definitely recommended

7 years on, anyone out there? Other than the koni, hard to find a set of 4 without springs, what else is there? Car has B6 Bils on, not sure how old, had the car 2 weeks and going around refreshing all the important stuff also I'm getting the Abarth 500 bumpstops as first base on the rear
