Hi guys,

I have just bought a fiat panda which will not run for more than a minute, when it does, it runs rough with black smoke, diesel knock etc.

I got these fault codes:

P0110 intake air temp circuit
P0683 pre-heat glow plug signal
P1673 capacitor voltage
P0530 A/C pressure sensor circuit
P0520 Engine oil pressure switch
P0101 Airflow sensor circuit

When I deleted the code and jump started the engine, I rechecked with the examiner and got P0110.
I then deleted it and started again.

There are now no fault codes present, however its obviously still running the same. So the failure is mechanical somewhere.

I need to check the fuel type is correct and then check the engine compression.

If anyone has ideas, please voice them, if not I will continue to report my findings.

Looks like you've bought a challenge!
Looking at your fleet you've obviously got some big experience in fixing Italians

First point, isn't it a MJ not a JRD ?

Sounds like it's something serious unless it a wet air filter, But this can cause hydraulic locking.
Engine is normally pretty solid, although there have been

Cam chain failures
Turbo waste gate actuators sticking
EGR valves gumming up
Injectors failing
Water into air filter and subsequent bent con rod
Connectors to ECU needing WD40

With such a low mileage (if true) wastegate or EGR valve would seem likely suspects.

I assume you don't know the history, it could have been filled and used with petrol, but I can't recall that there are any posts on this forum about that. I'm sure it must happen, even to Pandas.

Keep us posted

Mine ran very rough when the guides failed on my timing chain. On mine, the chain didn't break. It moved out of sync.

Alternatively it could be EGR problem.

I had my EGR valve replaced which definitely helped low rev response, but I'm wondering if this isn't more like a fuel pump issue. Has the fuel filter been changed do you know?

I'm also wondering if it's had a bad dose of the rainwater problem (where the rain drips through the screwhole in the middle of the black plastic below the wipers)? A lot of us have had a small dose of that, but a larger dose can cause damage.

Just asking to be shot down, I'll say that he screw itself is not the problem with water in the inlet manifold.

The screw goes into a nylon plug inserted into the metal scuttle, and this has two splits designed in, so that the screw grips. The more you tighten the screw the wider these splits get. Water runs UNDER the screw and the plug, and seeps through these splits. Removing the plug and blanking the hole stops water ingress (I've used double-sided tape to secure my plastic to the scuttle here).

BUT - that's just part of the water ingress problem. Take out the complete air inlet/filter housing and you will see that it has probably warped at the rear. This not only lets any water seep around the air filter on its OUTSIDE and straight into the inlet tract, but even if you have blanked off the screw it still lets unfiltered air in the same way.
I have heated mine with a heat gun and 'remoulded' it, but an additional fix is to use gaffer tape along the rear of the filter housing to seal it completely.

Update: removed the glow plugs to test their operation and found number 1 to be oily with the end bent.

I'm taking bets on what has happened. Winner announced tomorrow :)

You're keeping us all in suspense!

Ok....

Obviously something hard has broken up and entered the cylinder at some point. Everything is intact in terms of rings and bearings show little wear, the crank is in good order too.

The loss of compression is a result of the piston rings being jammed in their ring lands as they have closed up from the impact.
