Hello,
I have a 2006 active 1.1 Panda can some one please tell me if the engine is Interference or non interference.

Also im getting the cam belt replaced soon, and i need to save to money to do so. Any ideas on what the cost would/should roughly be?

The 54hp and 60hp are none interference.
Later 69hp's are interference as is the 100hp.
1.3 Multijet diesel have chains.

Out of all the FIRE's I've had, I've never bothered to change the cam belt due to the non interference design, never had one fail either.
 
I had a 1988 Uno FIRE. I replaced the belt when it snapped.

Hi,:) non-interference,
belt is @ £12,
complete kit is @ less than £40,
takes @ 1 hour to fit ,

I've done mine a few times now,

I think there was a bit of crossover, mine is a screw cap 1.2 but I'm 99% sure non interference - it's only a euro 4 and in the higher tax bracket. Feels the same as the other bog standard 1242 8 valves I've had so I'm assuming no VVC.

If your oil filler cap is the screw on type, make sure you change your cambelt when it's meant to be done as it means you have an interference engine (y)!

I have no idea if that's actually the way to tell whether your Panda has an interference engine or not (all 100HP's are interference, so I don't need to concern myself with it), but that's what Varesecrazy meant, I think :).

Sorry to bring up an old thread..

But, I'm confused about this matter of interference or non-interference on the Panda. I know that the classic Panda with its old 900cc FIRE engine is 100% non interference.

However, I don't seem to have any concrete evidence to suggest the 1242cc or 1.1 is a non interference unit.

According to Haynes, Autodata and Honest John, they all state these engines (1.1 and 1.2) are now of an interference type. Honest John spoke to Massimo (engineer at FIAT) who said that the 1242cc engine is interference.

However Massimo might have been referring to Honestjohn's own 500 with the 169A.4000 VVT interference unit (Euro 5). But, HJ confirms Massimo was referring to all 1242cc units.

I'm confused. Has anyone had the 1242cc engine stripped and seen the non interference workings for themselves, or even had a belt snap on a punto or Panda with this engine and driven away the same day...

I believe that all the 1.1s are non-interference.
The 1.2 60hp is non-interference, although later ones had the screw in oil filler. (My 2006 Panda)
The 69hp 1.2 gained its extra power from being VVC, so all are interference. In the Panda, I think this coincided with the fitting of larger mirrors. All 500s are the 69hp engine.

If you change the cambelt when it is due, and the water pump and tensioner, and do the job right, it really does not matter.

I got my cambelt and waterpump changed on my Panda when it was 5 years old. The car is fine, but it was just the way people happily refer to the engine as non-interference but I struggle to find concrete info on this.

1.2 60 bhp - 188A.4000, which my Panda has. (2009 Eleganza)
1.2 69 bhp - 169A.4000

If it has VVT its interference, if it doesn't then it is not. Only the FIRE engined classic Panda's are none interference, anything else is (or chain I think).
 
Hi,

1242cc (169A.4000) is VVT - Ford KA, Grande Punto, new Panda (2012-), 500.

1242cc (188A.4000) is non-VVT - Fiat Panda (2003-2011) and Fiat Punto MK2 (code: 188)

The 1.3 Multijet is obviously interference as it's a diesel and requires compression.

So, since there is no firm answer. I'd still have to stick with the conclusion that the 1242cc (188A.4000) is interference.

Haynes for the Panda/500 refers to three engines.
Up to eng: 2533527 (pre-modification). This has the push in oil cap. Non-interference.
From eng: 2533528 (pre-modification). This has a round oil cap. Non-interference.
EVO2/Euro5 Round oil cap. Interference. "Engine ECU bolted to end of cylinder head cover." This is all 70hp engines.

I believe the EVO2 referred to the engine fitted to the Grande Punto/500...

My Panda has a round screw oil cap (not the rubber square push on cap) but it still has a throttle cable (not fly-by-wire).

I think fly-by-wire is fitted to the Euro 5 interference engined FIAT cars.

So, to clarify, if you're right Portland_Bill, my Panda (according to Haynes) has a non interference engine.

Having read the Haynes Manual for the 500/Panda it seems to get quite confused. It states Euro 5 on the Panda came into force 07/2006. It states there are three tunes of engine which is correct.

- Square oil cap
- Round oil cap and cable throttle
- flybywire throtte and Euro 5 with round oil cap.

It does state in the manual just after referring to all the engines to take care when dealing with the timing belt as piston to valve contact can occur on all three engines.

Firstly IGNORE the HAYNES - they say all FIRE engines are interference to cover their arse.

The only physical change to the FIRE engine regarding stroke / valves etc is to those with VVT fitted. As such logically it'll only be these affected by a timing belt failure. If in doubt though just change the belt and all should be good for another 4 years.
