The Elegenza I'm buying had its MOT today. It has passed with an advisory: NS front wheel rim is bent on inside. I know this is common with the potholes we have now but is it serious? Does anyone have experience of this?
Thanks

Depends how bad it is, my dealership claimed that one of my wheels was buckled, how they can see this I do no know as the wheels all look fine :)

Does it affect the way your car drives? I didn't notice any vibration on the test drive and it didn't fail it's MOT so I suppose it can't be that bad.

In the worst case, a bent or buckled rim could lead to sudden tyre deflation, but if this were likely, it probably wouldn't have made it through the MOT.

I'd say if you're in doubt, you should get it checked out by someone competent; the cynic in me thinks that, even if you somehow managed to find such a person, finding one without a vested interest would be near on impossible.

The worry is what would happen if you hit a second pothole with the same part of the wheel.

The most likely scenario is you'll end up with a flat tyre. Sod's law says it'll be somewhere inconvenient, late at night, and in the pi***ng rain.

This is when most punctures happen. No prizes for guessing how I know this.

You're probably right there. I like the car and don't really want to walk away from it and, as you say, if it were likely to affect tyre performance it wouldn't have passed the MOT.

A final thought: Finding an Eleganza wheel if you need one in a hurry might not be that easy, and it likely won't be cheap.

If you do buy the car, I'd keep a look out on ebay and the forum classifieds; if a reasonably priced one comes up, get it while you have the chance.

Good idea. Thanks.

Much experience.

1. I had a Seicento wheel fail with the same result years back. You could clearly see as they spun the wheel. On the rear you would barely notice the vibration.

2. Three of my Panda 100hp wheels got flat-spotted. The vibration was there but not that bad. When we took the wheels off and spun them on the tyre balancer, it was VERY obvious. I've had them 'repaired' at £30 a wheel. Having just taken them to the tyre place, they're still not perfect - you can see it on the wheel-balancer. Nevertheless, with some added weight they will balance up. Whether they pass an MOT next year is another matter (they will be my winter wheels now so not a major issue).

Where did you get the repair done? I need to find a place local to me on Lincoln if it needs to be done.

There's always a few places around. In Chesterfield there are several all wanting £60 per wheel - but I found that they all took them to this lonely specialist welder in Clay Cross who charged only £30. Busy man and he took 2 weeks about it.

In the end though - the wheel were more round but not perfect. That is to say, the obvious flat-spot had gone but spun on a balancer it was still obvious.

I'd already purchased some FIAT Punto alloys cheap off ebay and so had no urgency. They're still on......

Nip thee sen over t'Pennines and fetch these:
