Whilst basically agreeing with what you say, if you took that line with most used car dealers, they'd likely laugh at you and show you the door.

IMO cars of this age are best bought privately. That way you get to meet the previous owner & can make an informed judgment about how the car has likely been used.

If you are in any doubt at all, best just to walk away.

I personally wouldnt take that actual line as I have no need to, I would plug the diagnostic gear in and check - which is what I have done and do do..;).
However, the general public usually does not have the diagnostic equipment, but, fiat do.. there is nothing wrong with agreeing a price on condition of the diagnostic check.

Unfortuantely, the general public seem fixated in the UK by mileage and registration year / plates for some very strange reason. At the end of the day, if you intend to keep the car for a long time, then it is purely condition that is important.
Some muppets would pay more for a knackered 2010 model than a mint 2006 -simply because of the number plate..
Others would buy a clocked car so they could look at a lower mileage to 'feel better' about it..
It is a sad part of UK culture unfortunately... car dealer are basically thieves in suits. The general public is for the most part, 'car' naiive. unfortuantely....

Also, it is great fun winding up dodgy car dealers  - I can assure you I have laughed out loud at more dealers than visa versa... and got the price I wanted to pay.... ;)

:yeahthat:All day long.

Thanks chaps i made an offer of £2500 which was refused then an offer of £2800 which was refused but this time with a comment that the car is priced competitively so looks like private sale is the way to go.

There's stacks of Pandas out there with genuine low miles - the nature of the car/buyers. You would be more guarded about other car purchases (Corsas/Fiestas) but many Pandas are merely pottered.

Hilton seem to have a £100 "admin" fee also. - bear that in mind.

I only ever offer what I think is right and never negotiate. I've lost cars over £50 because I won't budge. But, something will turn up, though as I said before, private Panda sales are very low - check autotrader - 10% at most are private sales.

Course you could check out the stack of yet more VERY low mile 2009 diesels that are coming up for auction at Mannheim.

Due to the buoyant second-hand car market dealers are feeling a bit smug at the moment and they are taking top money for the cars they know everyone wants.

to clarify the above -
It is 'unusual' for private entries to be blocked (auction) ... not unheard of, but unusual..
If the car was a trade in that the dealer wanted shut of (they dont want older cars on the forecourt) they block them straight away - but, the dealers name is shown in the auction ! - this wasnt.
If you are buying privately now, for this, then the guy selling it is a dealer posing as private - no genuine private buyer would buy from an auction then resell it a few months later...
IF it is a dealer, get him to guarantee - in writing - the mileage. Then get it checked by Fiat - it is cheaper to actually buy the kit and do it yourself !
It all depends what you paid though, if you got it at a good price, and it runs well and looks well, no worries, if you bought it with the mileage being a major contributing factor, I would be very very cautious.
Sorry to be rather negative - but still, a good car is a good car though at the end of the day. Just NEVER trust the mileage. I personally would not trust that one without absolute proof - mind you, I trust no vehicle without absolute proof....

So, to recap, if you paid low dosh for it, about 2K or so, probably A OK if it drives well and looks well.
Ok I've just seen your reply!! It seems a real straight car so strange it's a private entry. It's from mold so local. It was part ex into volvo specialist in shotton as there hpi report is in the paperwork and there's no extra owners on the v5. I might give the previous owner a knock. Cheers.
