Hi all,
we brought a panda mj for the wife and have had a couple of problems with it , the most annoying thing is that it is smoking on start up and also when driving, its an 08 with 55,000 on the clock
the engine light comes on and when we take it to the dealer he just turns it off, i brought a obd2 reader and torque pro app, i have run the app and it comes up with a P0238 which is a turbo boost sensor "A" circuit high.
does anybody know if this may casuse the smoke, will take it back with the fault code to see what happens

thanks all

was ment to be serviced before we picked it up, i have checked the air filter for water and is clear but filter has not been changed so not sure about service before we picked it up, will check the service history

Mine would tend to smoke when it's getting to the point of requiring new filters.

As you're new to MJ ownership, check and see if anyone has added sealant to the screwhole in the middle of the black bit under the wipers. If not, add some. It'll save you problems further down the road.

i have checked the hole and is very dry, been to the dealer today and he is taking it tomorrow to be looked at, had a quick look under the engine and there is oil all around the turbo, so it could be a loose pipe or a hole in a pipe, will see what the workshop say

That doesn't sound healthy. Hopefully you'll get it sorted easily.

Hi there, I suggest that you take out the air filter, then test drive and evaluate the result. If the smoke is reduced you've found the problem - if it doesn't, re-install the old filter (or better still put in a new one) and we'll move onto the next test.

Can someone please tell me if this engine has an EGR valve???? I'm guessing that like most diesels nowadays, it does.

Dave

Then on the basis that it does have an EGR valve I would be taking it off, cleaning it then putting it back with a blanking plate so it won't get bunged up again. This is the sort of thing you need:

Does this engine have a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor? If it does, it'll need cleaning as well. Spray with Brake and Clutch aerosol and re-install.

Hi thebiglad, thanks for your reply, i have changed the air filter and it is still the same, the smoke is a sort of white colour and has the smell of an old bus, the engine light comes on about 3000 revs when under load, the car went back to the dealer today and i gave him a list of possible causes including the egr valve and the map sensor, will see what happens

Hi RB, white smoke on a diesel engine is often caused by:

1. Leaking head gasket, or

2. Low compression on one or more cylinders, resulting in unburnt fuel.

Good luck

time for an update, picked the car up today after 2 weks and it seems sorted, the dealer took it to a diffarent garage and they said the turbo waste gate actuator was siezed and have replaced the turbo,

we have give it a good thrashing and no smoke yet and it feels a lot better, smoother on tick over and revs a bit easier, will see how it is in the morning with a cold start.

thabks for all your input

All egr and DPF's want binning lol (y)

Completely agree with that sentiment.

I come from Jaguar Land Rover circles and the first thing I do on those diesels is to remove the EGR valve(s) completely; then into the ECU to tell the car they're not fitted-no warning lights then :D:D

Nice one :D
Yup, used to do the same on the Smart Car (Oiler), a couple of resistors was enough to trick the ecu IIRC, that was, as you say, removing it completely as opposed to a simple blanking plate.
The other benefit is access to other areas as the egr and piping makes for a lot of hardware under the hood. The crap that gets ingested back into the intake is ridiculous. Soot n Gunge City . I believe ti actually reduces fuel consuption removing the bugger, at the cost of a few blades of grass if you believe the hype, which I dont lol (y)

Removing EGR valves

We found on Landys that they ran better all round - better response, better mpg, better low-down torque etc etc. On the TD5 Landys there is a sensor in the inlet manifold which gets completely cacked-up with this sooty, Marmite-lite substance and so stops the sensor from working properly. A quick clean with aerosol brake and clutch cleaner and you can actually feel the difference.

Do the MJD Fiat diesel engines have a post EGR valve inlet manifold sensor? If yes, it'll be worth cleaning

Now, if you use less fuel for a given journey, that's better for the grass, surely?

Dave

i know this is an old thread but i think its time to try and blank the EGR valve, its still smoking under acceleration after trying some redex in a couple of tanks of fuel.

will have to sorce a blanking plate and try and get in the confined space to fit it, will let you know how it all ends up
