Guys
The 100hp I bought had a new cambelt, water pump and tensioner a month before I bought it. I have a reciept.

However there appears to be a friction type noise coming from the cambelt cover. It's defo not alternator or Aircon so I wondered are these noisy engines? It defo sounds like a worn tensioner type noise. Am I being paranoid? Are they noisy?

Thanks

Mike

That's a pain and I can understand why you're worried. As it's so hard to describe noise, I'm sure you can find another 100HP-owning member not too far way and you can meet up to listen to the two side-by side. (If you haven't done it) can I also suggest getting a piece of inch or so diameter pipe, such as plastic plumbing pipe, about a foot long and listen to the engine with one end of the pipe right by your ear and the other in touch with different parts of the engine - very effective in deciding exactly where the noise is coming from. Could be there's nothing to worry about.

If poss, remove the covers and check for evidence of rubbing.
Then with engine running you may be able to see the problem.
Don't try the listening trick above with the covers removed, unless you are very careful. Don't want to damage you or the car.

The garage I bought from said they'd take a look but its a two hour drive and I'm not sure I can be bothered.

I think I'll get it booked in for peice of mind. Frustrating but not work the risk (let alone two hours on the motorway with a dodgy cambelt lol)

I've listened. Really needs a 100hp owner to compare with their own. Sounds like a tight belt, which shouldn't be an issue if it is a sprung tensioner. Other options could be water pump.

Specify a better location, there might be another 100hp owner near enough to meet and compare.

Thanks. I'm gonna get the covers off to make listening a bit easier.

Just an update on this. We had the cambelt cover off and the noise appeared to be coming from down by the waterpump. The reciept for the service has the words "replace waterpump" in different colour ink to the rest of the invoice so I'm not taking the risk. It's got a pattern belt on it for a start so its gone in today for new belt tensioner And pump. I look forward to seeing what the "old" pump is like. Will be worth it to get rid of the whirring noise either way!!

All done. £240 all in, took out the pattern waterpump, belt and tensioner and fitted genuine parts and the noise has gone. Can't see a brand on the pump but its a good reason to use OEM parts.

What price piece of mind eh.
