I'm going to be doing a basic service on my wife's friends panda 1.2 dynamic - it's a 56 plate IIRC.

What oil does it use? How much do I need - I've read conflicting posts.

I've not looked under the bonnet yet but is the easily filter accessible?

I have a set of hex key sockets from my multipla days so shouldn't have any trouble with the sump plug.

Thanks

I used to do mine myself on many cars but is it really worth it any more? I used a motor factors near here (careful, get a quote first) and if I supply the filter myself, which is where they often make a mark-up, it's only £5 more than doing it myself. Very messy and illegal if you just pour the old oil in a drain.

Hi,
pretty straightforward job,
I still do all of mine - so I know the works actually been done.. AND right,

@ 4 litres of oil,
the FIRE engines have a rubber plug/bung type filler cap , can get quite firm ( solid) with age so don't be too suprirsed if it needs a good yank to pull out,
filter is on front of engine , easy to see , but quite tight to engine so a skinny tool is needed,

STD FIAT Tapered sump plug, nice + easy,
just be wary of leaky / weak steel in the Sump itself..!!

I'm still puting 10/40 semi synth in mine, ( cheap for regular changes)
I'm sure you will got LOTS of other opinions..,

have fun,
Charlie

Why would you do that

OP I use 5W40 Fully Synth Oil, but you can use 10w40 semi without issue, thats what I use in our classic Panda's.

I don't do oil changes myself because disposal is so awkward. The local recycling place accept it but getting it there with no residual mess is almost impossible.

I don't, but some people DO pour engine oil in the street drains, I was just hoping the OP wouldn't.

It is if you drop the sump plug in the basin you're draining in to!

Diesels can be messy too, the mucky stinking oil that falls out of the bottom of them.
Then they usually have the paper filters in a housing you have to fish out!

Then you wait till the car has finished draining fully use a old screw driver to shove the plug to one side of the oil pan then tip it slightly oil drains away from plug and you pick it out........ ;)

For those element types... take a small peddle bin bag open it up simply lift filter out of the housing and drop in the bag....

those in cars are tiny wait till you start playing with plant machinary

or the can type which are the size of 5l paint cans which you can only undo by braying a wrecking bar through it with a lump hammer
;)

since im at my pc here is the guide i mentioned earlier

Cant see you logic regarding dropping the sump plug making it messy. The only time it might slightly get messy is with paper oil filters. I'm not an expert, but do a few oil changes and you'll soon know how to stop yourself from being mucky.

Or work on engines which take close to 25l of oil.....

the 576 version of this sump plug is in the rear wheel arch directly above the wheel :bang:

Cheers for all the replies - the reason I got the job to do is that she's skint, my labour is free - the car hasn't had an oil change for about 20k! Now the oil light flickers on now and again, I suspect the oil is so thin now (if there is any in there!) or the oil pump is on it's way out.

Asda has both 5/40 fully synthetic and 10/40 part synthetic GTX on offer for £12 for 4 litres so I thought i'd suggest she buys some of that. Any issues with castrol in FIAT engines?

I would be taking my old oil to my local recycling centre - I have another spare 5 litre can for it to go into.

I'll see if I can get the vin number so I get the correct filter.

Read this. The post describes the procedure for a 1.2 500 but the procedure for the 1.2 Panda is identical.

Access to the oil filter is from under the car. This guide is written for the absolute beginner and anyone with any experience of car mechanics will find it absolutely straightforward.

You could always copy and paste that into the 500 guides section ;)

I could do it but then i get all the likes and thanks

hi again,
you may find the actual oil-level is low , and pressure drops on corners / road humps..,

filters can be a bit of a minefield, ideally see old one before you buy it's replacement..,

only bad experience was buying HALFODS filters - not a new filter..!!
HAD NO THREAD in it..!! = bad enough but put back on shelf for me to buy..!!!,

I've used all OIL brands in our 1.1 and 1.2 FIRE engines = had no issues.

That is a very dangerous thing to do as you are making the assumption the previous person got it right! Much better to search the catalog and buy the proper filter for your car - if you go to a reputable FIAT dealer, they should be able to do this from the registration number.

OEM filters aren't as expensive as you might think - I bought six last autumn from a main dealer for a tad over £30.

If there is an option of a short fat one and a long thin one, at least you know what to expect at the spares counter,

I'm afraid I lost my faith in FIAT personell 20 years ago,
" peanuts and monkeys " is the phrase I believe.

Had 3 , attempts at supplying the correct cam-belt, NONE of which actually fitted..!,
not funny when it's a 40 mile round trip each time.
