OK, I've recently had a phone call from the Renault dealer and they think that the base model 4x4 Dacia Duster that I ordered will be available for me to test drive on 14th January. At that point I will be able to discuss the deal if I want to go ahead. Now Dacias are being sold on a strictly no discount basis so the trade in on my Cross is the only negotiating point.
Digressing a bit here, I know the Duster seems rather different from the Panda but I view it, in base model form, as the Panda 4x4 of our times now that Fiat have taken the actual Panda 4x4 way up-market. The simple, stripped down Duster really appeals to me and it's very likely I will go for it.
So, on to my question, what do you think the dealer will offer for the Cross? Another question, what would YOU be prepared to pay for the car, for example in a private sale?
The background information. It's an October 2008 model, black over sand colour, 41,000 miles and serviced according to Fiat schedules. Mechanically it's as well looked after as I've been able to. General condition average/good. List price was £12,500 new (though many of you know I paid less) because of the addition of the sliding rear seat and metallic paint.
As you might have seen from another post, there's a very similar but damaged Cross up in Cramlington on offer for £3000. There's a few on Autotrader, mainly at dealers and at silly prices.
I don't want anyone to think this is a small-ad masquerading as a post. I'm looking for a bit of information to help negotiate at the dealers and also to help me decide whether to trade the Cross in or dispose of it another way. However, if anyone wanted to offer this car a good home then feel welcome to PM me, especially if you want to do some kind of swap for a petrol-engined front wheel drive Panda.
It will be interesting to know how the real world values this car as opposed to the fairy tale land of Woodleigh Fiat!

The diesel 4x4 Pandas are sought-after and residuals are high.

This might give you a starting point for your negotiations.

The metallic paint & sliding seat won't make any difference to the valuation, but the lower mileage will add £300 - £400.

I'd say you'll be doing well if you can get £6500 trade-in; it might just make £7000 in a private sale if in first-class condition. Adjust downwards for any significant cosmetic/interior/exterior wear or damage.

Come back and let us know what Renault offer you and we'll take it from there.

Thanks for the info and the link to Parkers. I didn't look there because I thought they charged for valuations these days. I did get a free valuation through What Car a couple of months ago and it was somewhat less.

Supply and Demand. Fact is, Woodleigh have actually sold some of their stock - god knows how and at what price but some stuff has shifted.

Personally I'd shell out a few quid to stick it on Autotrader and see who bites at £7500 - and expect a call from Woodleigh anyway.

As for the Duster - take your point about that. Saw a metallic bronze (a.k.a. dark brown) one in Spain. Looked reasonably smart/rugged. Far too big for my liking but hey. It's a 4x4, it'll hold it's value.

Blinkin' flip - there's a blast from the past! Used to be a Dacia dealer in Bristol with a Duster on the roof many years ago. I've just googled and, erm the new Duster is rather different to the old (which really did look a bit like an old panda on steroids LOL). I think the old Duster's were right up there with the Mahindra Jeep for speed and comfort. the new one looks like it might be a bit better! In fact, I've just noticed the RRP... :tempt:

Cheers.

Out of interest - how much use have you made of the sliding rear seat? I ask partly because Mrs b_u's lamented Panda MJ had this option and it was extremely useful on relatively few occasions - every time we had more than two people in the car, and every time we went to and from Italy in it, a total of 20 days in the year, say - and partly because some of the appeal of the Mk 4 Panda seems to be based around this facility.

I've rarely used the sliding rear seat as I either carry passengers but very little luggage or travel alone with a lot of luggage requiring the seat to be folded flat. I didn't choose this extra, all the cars available when I bought mine had it fitted already.
When the Cross was launched it was available "off the shelf". None of this ordering and waiting 2 months for delivery!

:yeahthat:

Let us know what offer woodleigh make. Actually, why not call them and see what they offer?
At least you'll have a good starting point to gauge renaults offer.

Sunderland's a lot further North than Chesterfield (we refer to Yorkshiremen as Southern softies) so I doubt if they would want to come up from Woodleigh's!

Chesterfield's in Derbyshire, not Yorkshire - a common mistake. Like calling folks from Sunderland Geordies, canny lad....

As for Woodleigh, their stock seems to come from all over - that may well explain some of the price!=.

You could call them for nothing but I suspect they'd offer 'bottom book'. Plus, there are enough wannabes out there offering 'genuine bargain' Cross's for over £10k.

Advertise it online for three weeks with Autotrader at £7,999 and expect to come down to £7,500. Don't bother with the print version.

However for that you will need to get it looking its very best, otherwise I'm afraid you are just another private seller with a less-than-perfect car, which no one will pay top dollar for.

Get the polishing cloths and upholstery cleaner out, or spend a few quid on a valet (inc. under the bonnet) and keep it in the garage while you're advertising it as immaculate – the first serious punter should buy it.

Good luck!

PS. the sliding rear seats are incredibly useful if you have a biggish dog like a labrador, 'cause otherwise it really is a tight squeeze for them, so make sure you highlight that in the advert (without making it sound like you run a mobile kennel service!).

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions so far, they are read and appreciated.
I did know that Chesterfield is in Derbyshire, honest, but Derbyshire folk don't refer to "Southern softies" in my experience so I went for poetic licence and dramatic effect.
I actually passed Chesterfield on the M1 yesterday as I drove up from Somerset but didn't have the energy to call in at Woodleigh's.
No word yet about my Dacia Duster and I've just heard a rumour that no Access models came in on the shipment at Port of Tyne last month so I might be waiting until March.
Good job the Cross is running smoother than ever, lovely run up from Somerset on quiet motorways, 45mpg with mountain bike on the roof.

I use the sliding rear seat every week when I do the weekly shop! Without the seat pushed forward the shopping won't all fit in the boot.

An update.
I found the Duster an absolute delight to drive.
The dealer offered £6,200 as a trade-in for the Cross which I thought was fair. For various reasons I don't want the hassle of a private sale (sorry, Trevor from Whitby)!
Au revoir Panda in 7-10 days, but I may be back on this forum!

Did you plump for the £8995 4x4 Duster 4x2 or something more exotic?

Should be big and comfy I imagine.
