Not been on this forum for a while as the Panda (2005 1.2) has been running well and I sold the Multipla in 2009. 'Twas a sad day but after ten years she was starting to show signs of her age.
However the Panda has now developed a ticking noise (like a loud wris****ch) from the engine compartment. It's not present at tickover but starts as soon as the accelerator is pressed.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Many thanks.

And....does the ticking speed up and slow down with the engine speed?

In my Panda 1.1 (and not only) the ticking speed goes up and down with the engine speed; it appears only when accelerating, in winter mornings, when the engine is still cold; when the temperature gauge reaches "Normal", it dissapears.
Also, when the car it's stationary, it dissapears (transmission? gearbox?)

And no one seems to know why...

Well, once upon a time I'd have said something along the lines of, tappets, bearings, too thin oil or lack thereof. But, as has so often been pointed out in here, I know nothing of these more modern engines and cars.
{wanders off mumbling about STP, competition oil pumps, twin Webers and dropping in a bigger engine before night shift...ahhh, those were the days}

Thanks for the ideas folks, I'll have another close listen at the weekend and get back to you...

The weekend!? Well, take a close look at the end of the dipstick when you finally get around to it.

Take the car to your nearest Dealer & they can give it a once over for you to see if they can locate the problem.

In my case, I'm sure it's not an oil issue.
Anyway, it's not a serious problem.
I'm just curious, that's all. Never thought on spending money on Dealer's just for that.
Oil, ECU scan, engine function... everything is ok.

I enjoyed reading the amusing replies (not sure I've worked out one or two yet!). To get on to a serious answer I think you may have a manifold gasket going, or a crack in the manifold (sounds like tch tch tch......)

My 4x4 1.2 does this too. Not always. But when it does, the sound starts at about 1500 rpm, and doesn't seem to vary in speed as the revs rise after that.

I had to have a fault code read the other day (engine warning came on and car went to limp mode-- turned out to be a spark plug lead that hadn't fully reseated after my DIY service). But I wanted to know what the code was, just in case. The code (don't know what 'number' it was) was for a fault with the Evap(oration) Purge Valve, apparently. This is a valve by the throttle body that opens to create a slight vacuum in the fuel tank to prevent fumes escaping when the car is parked -- all part of the 'greening' of modern cars. The ticking noise is this valve operating too frequently, apparently -- either the valve itself is at fault, or the sensor wiring (which runs all the way back to the fuel tank), or the vacuum hose (a bright blue tube connected to the valve, which is at the back of the inlet manifold and goes right back to the fuel tank), or the pressure sensor at the tank end, or even a loosely-fitting fuel filler cap (which can prevent a vacuum being formed). Or at least, that's what the Bosch centre tell me. Can result in a slight loss of power. I've not fixed it yet...

[later edit: strictly, the vacuum is applied to the evaporation purge tank, which is connected to the fuel tank and I believe contains a charcoal canister to absorb escaping fumes too. I believe this is behind the plastic panel in the right rear wheel arch]

Aha! Found where the noise is coming from! It's a black Marelli valve part no CK0013770 - part of the fuel supply - held in by a circlip with electrical connection and easy to remove (I did).
Does it need replacing or is it just going to rattle annoyingly?
If replacement, can anyone suggest a good place to buy parts?
Thanks.
