1.3 diesel help!

Hi ive got a corsa 1.3 cdti, yes in know this is a fiat forum , but i believe they both use the same engine

Im basically after some help, im having intermittent starting problems for my cdti;

* when cold it doesnt always start 1st time, it runs rough like its not running on all 4 and , if i hold the revs at 1500rpm there is loads of white smoke and vibration. Fine once its warmed up. Then sometimes ive driven for 30 mins and left the car for 15 mins and it struggles starting, just turning over for about 5-10 secs and sounds rough. this is totally random too!

* i get an occasional/ hesitation.misfire when driving, this is totally random, it can happen once then not again for weeks (usually when ive got low fuel) , it can also do it all thru a journey, or as mentioned just a one off.

had the codes read when it first started happening were; low pressure on the rail, glow plug curcit open and fuel system malfunction. These have been cleared and no more codes have ever come up!

Ive had the following components replaced; EGR, in tank fuel pump and fuel filter.

im going mad here, any ideas? pls

glow plugs?

Re: 1.3 diesel help!

Sounds like a sticking injector. If it sticks open you'll get low pressure as it'll be flowing permanently plus the white smoke is unburnt diesel. I'd expect a sticking injector to continue to throw error codes up though - they did on my old Mondeo.

Re: 1.3 diesel help!

Do the latest diesels have glowplugs? I had a Tipo 1.9Tds years ago and that sounds like what would happen if it had an inoperative glowplug.

yes,
try this..,
on a cold morning , turn the ignition on , let the glow plug light go off , then turn the ignition off then straight back on again, till the glow light goes out again, do this a couple of times to thoroughly "warm-up " the glow plugs,
if it starts better , you are probably due a set of glow-plugs.

not running on all 4 when cold starting is a classic sign,

BUT, it sounds like you have something else amiss also ( not too serious), as the hesitating when warm is unrelated.

Re: 1.3 diesel help!

Does sound like at least one of the glow plugs has gone is it new enough to have a particulate filter which will not like having loads of unburnt fuel around strangling the exhaust. What sort of age is car changed all four glow plugs last new year on mine.
Could also have emulsified Diesel in bottom of fuel tank suggesting a bit of water has got in or if you haven't done a lot of running on old fuel then even algae type growth can occur maybe drain tank flush fuel lines & change fuel filter cheapest actions I can suggest.

Re: 1.3 diesel help!

I'm not overly familiar with this engine, but I do have a common rail in my other car, a Fraud Suradoq, which are prone to the same sort of issues.
These tend to suffer from injector coding issues and low fuel pressure while cranking/starting (handbooks tend to advise a disengaged clutch when starting)

Though injector/s that leak by do lead to reduced rail pressure, white smoke, rough running and starting, hesitation (and all the other stuff you describe) are quite common with the common rail set up which run a very high fuel pressure compared to older diesel engines.

This may help you
http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php

Though self diagnostic on a modern common rail is somewhat difficult as there's a whole host of problems that'll cause the same symptoms and testing them is beyond the average diyer.

There is a diy leak off test described here which may point to an injector leaking
http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/tips_d...%20leakage.pdf

From personal experience, dealers are often quick to diagnose faulty injectors, at 200 to an eye watering 450 each for a Jaguar injector (note no s, that's for one), why wouldn't they recommend a set?

Try a diesel specialist that'll not just read a few codes and decides to replace expensive parts with new, but should know how to test each part of the system (like a leak off test which should be one of their first tests) and will no doubt supply and fit expensive parts like injectors with reconditioned items at a fraction of the dealer price.
