I have a 2004 panda 1.2 8v with 70k on the clock, and I’ve owned it since it had 30k on the clock.

My question is how important is it to check valve clearances?

If they are not checked what possible damage could occur?

Also how difficult are they to check?

How much would it roughly cost at a garage?

I ask this because lately the engine started to sound more 'tappety' than usual at idle and it is more pronounced at around 2500 RPM.

Many thanks.

Hi ,
basically , you just remove the cam-cover from the top of the engine ( 4 small bolts) , then wind the engine over and insert a feeler gauge into the " clearance " between the lobe of the cam , and the top of the "bucket" that sits on top of the valve , to check = EASY , 20 /30 mins probably @ 50 in a garage ,
IF adjustments are necessary ( shimmed out) TRICKY = it could be £100 /£150,

Normally you will have a settling of the figures during the engines running in period , (years ago..)
any changes now could be wear to the cam ( top-end oil starvation - not unheard of in the FIRE engines),

general wear and tear .., or worst-case the "necking " of the valves whereby the head could clout a piston crown .. - just like when a cam-belt breaks.

I've NEVER had to adjust a modern fiat engine , so I would just do the basic clearances test to see what / if you need to do from there ,
good luck,
Charlie
