Hi ,
the slave cylinder is sat on top of the gearbox ( underneath the car's battery),

if it's smelling hot then yes it's probably worn out ( the clutch plate itself) , - how many miles has it done..??

there should be no fluid leaking from the slave cylinder , any oily stains up there should be checked - out,
Charlie

If the slave cylinder was leaking it might make it hard to disengage the clutch, but you are having problems with engaging which is the normal state for the clutch. You simply need a replacement clutch.

found out that gearbox oil between the bell housing and clutch has been leaking so that said the seal had gone now tho anyone know how to part the gearbox do we have to take both drive shafts out as one has been taken out and cant part it

Hi ,
if you'd replied with a low mileage,
I would have suggested checking the fluid levels , as oil contamination will account for the smell..,
but - a slipping ,worn-out clutch will also generate heat and smelly fumes.

Yes,
it will be easier to remove both driveshafts ,
make sure you have ALL the bolts removed from the bell -housing , and the gear linkages.. , then grasp the gearbox by the metal plate at the far end ( outside - left of car) and give it a little wiggle ,
it should come off it's mounting dowels then.. MAKE SURE it's well supported..!!,
Charlie

Don't need to remove engine side driveshaft. It will fall out of the cup in the gearbox as it separates from the engine. If it isn't coming after all big bolts out, double check the thin protection plates that surround the interface between the box and engine. The bottom one will need a 10mm spanner/socket to remove two bolts before the box is freeable.
