To enlarge the choice of wheels by 10 times. I would concede that Alfa, Lancia and FIAT provide some of the best designs you could want, but some quest a unique (or conformative) look they cannot get in 4x98 PCD. I use 4x100 wheels on my Uno for performance reasons only because I can't afford to get customs made and there is no comparably light wheel from anywhere I could find in 4x98.

I don't believe there are any fundamental safety issues with the practice, but only if careful attention and respect is paid to the use of them. I wouldn't recommend them to someone who doesn't mess with mechanics a fair bit or likes to take their wheels off a lot.
