Hi guys and gals

Does anyone know if the 500 Sport 1.4 16v and the Panda 100HP gearboxes are the same at all??

Just going back to my 3rd gear problem, as I have spotted a few 500 1.4 16v gearboxes on ebay, i know the engines are the same, is everything else the same?

Thanks guys

Giuseppe

Although there must be some differences as the 6-speed boxes on the 1.2 & 1.4 Stilos have different part numbers.

OK, let me clarify. They all have the same actual forward gears and diffs. There have been small improvements or like-for-like changes with other parts like synchronisers and bearings. In the case of the Stilo boxes, they changed the reverse gear, which also meant a changed main shaft to mesh with it, but no other parts of the shaft were changed.

When comparing a FIAT gearbox it is best to compare the part numbers of the gears and shafts as that is what you are actually going to notice. Theoretically a later box has more improved parts, but the reason for FIAT changing parts isn't always for performance or reliability. It can be to save money or comply with a law.

There is a wide variety of differences in 5 speed boxes in comparison to 6 speed boxes. The 6 speeds were made as an after-thought and it seems after the initial effort, they have never been bothered to customise the ratios for each car. It's a shame as using one in an older car as a modification is annoying as 1st gear is useless and the gears are too close in general for normal use.
