Those of you who also visit the 500 section may remember I did a 120 mile round trip about 3 weeks ago to see just how economically I could drive it, & got 71.4mpg on the trip computer.

This amused me because this is actually higher than the official combined figure for the new twinAir & at that time several folks were struggling to get the twinAir to come anywhere near it.

Here's a link to that thread if anyone's interested:

So yesterday I got to thinking - just what could my Panda manage in similar circumstances? It was a nice day, so I set off to give it a try. Not quite the same route, but close enough for the comparison to be valid.

Here's the result:

The trip computer can sometimes be a little optomistic. But i do not deny, the 1.2 eco can deliver stunning fuel figures in the right conditions. (And you have to drive like a right ponce!)
I made a 370 mile trip to Exeter in the middle of the night, coasted at 55-60 mph all the way. The genuine consumption was 65 mpg click to click on the pump.
My own calculations not the trip computer, i was stunned.

Cool car, oil prices can do what they like, it may hurt but wont kill me.

I do owner what you would get driving the same way in a twin air?

Good figures though. To think I am over the moon at mid-high 30s to the gallon in the 100hp, still not took it on a decent run yet, mainly 10 mile routes.

The trip computer is indeed optimistic, by about 5mpg, on both Panda & 500. So your real world figures are almost identical to mine.

And although you do indeed have to drive like a right ponce to achieve these numbers, the 1.2 engine has just the right amount of torque and flexibility to get the job done with the minimum of effort.

Thanks.

I'd like to give the twinAir a decent comparative test, too. What I also wonder is how comfortable the twinAir would be if driven this way.

I have, however, driven the 1.1 active Panda, and the lack of torque makes serious ecoDriving much more of a chore in that car, & I very much doubt I'd be able to match the economy in it, either.

Thanks Trev. I've still got a long way to go to catch up with your most impressive results from Squirrile. LadyKitching uses the Panda for her daily commute, and although she's at least as good at ecoDriving as I, the nature of her route makes it hard for her to get better than the low 50's.

By the way, how do you manage to get multiple Fuelly banners in your signature?
