Hi everyone, this is my first post in the panda section :)

I sold my pug 307 last weekend, and am now the proud owner of a grey 57 plate 100HP with 24k on the clock. :)
Thanks to advice after looking on here, i've got a locking fuel cap on order.
Just a quick question regarding the coolant level, it's currently on the minimum mark, and hasn't moved at all since purchasing the car last saturday and doing a few 100 miles in it, so would it be ok to top it up with just a little bit of water to put it nearer the maximum mark? For peace of mind sake rather than anything else. Ive checked for leaks and oil contamination, everything seems to be ok.

Sorry for the long first post

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to getting to know everyone :)

Ian

Welcome to the Panda section. Hope you have many pleasurable, trouble free miles with your new car.

Given the age of your car & unless you have absolute proof that the coolant has been changed in the last 12 months, I'd drain & refill with a decent pink antifreeze.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's never been changed since new.

For reasons that have never been divined my 100HP has consistently reduced its water level to the minimum mark when cold within a few hundred miles of being topped up above the mark. It's done this since new in October 2008 and has done 23k miles with no problems.

Not sure if this is reassuring or confirms that I should be a (not too serious) co-worrier.

I think it just means that topping it up results in you losing that extra coolant, so if you like it finds it's own level. Mine is always a bit below minimum when cold but it hasn't moved for 2.5 years. So really, as long as it's close to the minimum it will be fine I think.

Thanks for the reassurance - I'm sure you're right.

No worries. If it helps, I've had a similar thing on other car's I've had. Remember on the old MR2 I'd always top it right up to the level and always find a bit had gone, but it never got low on coolant, it's just if there isn't enough room to expand as it cycles from cold to hot to cold again, any extra will evaporate off. Though on the MR2 it would tend to squirt the excess out, but as long as you left it the level remained constant.

As long as it doesn't keep going down, I'd say leave well alone and don't top up to the max level as you'll just probably lose it anyway.

So as long as the level is constant, don't worry.

Thanks for all the replies and advice :) i'll leave it alone for now, and i'll keep an eye on it. i'm sure it'll be fine. It's the first fiat ive had, so got to get used to it. Do all 100HP's have an alarm? The reason i ask is on my previous cars thers always been a red flashing light or small icon illuminated when the car is locked, to show the alarm and/or immobilser is armed. But my panda has nothing flashing, or anything at all for that matter, to indicate the vehicle is locked and the alarm is set. So i'm a bit confused

Thanks again

Ian
