I was looking to buy a Panda as well but they kept on putting off the diesel so I bought a Punto instead. I havent driven a Panda but I did drive a Punto 1.2 petrol and 1.3 diesel so can compare them for you. I would guess that the same engines are in the Panda as the Punto but have been modified (electronically) slightly as I know that the power of the 1.3 Panda version is less than the Punto.
I have driven both on the motorway and found them both to be very good at pulling (they comfortably get to 80mph so keep an eye on the speedo), the main difference is where the pulling power/acceleration is as is typical with differences between most petrol and diesels.
Obviously if ecconomy is your prime factor go for the diesel as I get 65mpg over a range of 500 miles (2 weeks) usual travel (town and dual carriageway (average speed 28mph)).
I hope this helps
