My 100HP has been in and all the linkages and cables have been checked, so the only things that haven't been checked are the internals (the oil level has been checked btw). They say there isn't a fault. I'm getting the impression that they don't care about it and just want to get rid of me. I tried speaking to a guy about it (the person that had driven it previously) and it was obvious that he wasn't interested. This person appeared to be very knowledgable, but it's starting to look like he told me a load of rubbish.

I suspect that they usually keep customers quiet by telling them lots of technical things that they won't understand. Some of the technical stuff doesn't always seem to be relevant, so either they aren't quite understanding what I was saying or they just think I haven't got a clue what they're talking about.

There was something that I really couldn't understand, but it was very interesting (if it's true). Apparently the 1st and 2nd gears share the idler gear so you can't select 1st unless you're moving very slowly. In the next sentence he said 1st shared the 'ring' with reverse. I always thought that the idler gear was only used for idle and reverse (on most gearboxes), is this correct? What kind of 'ring' does reverse have? It doesn't have a synchro, so is there another kind of ring? For me 1st gear seems to work just as well as the other gears (at any speed). I agree that it will wear the synchro out if I select 1st at higher speeds, but it should work until that wears out. btw I don't normally do this, so it's not as if I have worn it out.

For me it feels like a synchro problem, but I can't understand how it would be on every gear. When I get the fault it sometimes feels like two spinning things are coming together at different speeds and I can feel their speeds matching. I might change the gearbox oil and see what kind of metalwork comes out.

Without meaning to be rude, it would have been better to continue the tale in your original thread.

With regard to selecting 1st, a few of my new students move into it when looking for 3rd - so that's around 20mph. Fortunately, I can quickly put down the dual-control clutch before they release their left foot!

Try a gearbox specialist instead of a Fiat dealer.

Haven't read the original post but poor synchromesh in ALL gears leads me to suspect clutch drag as a possible cause. I'd want to rule this out before dismantling the 'box.

I did think about using the old thread, but it is very long.

Trying a gearbox specialist may not be a bad idea (I know one nearby). It is still under warranty though so I could only use them to diagnose the fault, but not fix it. It'll cost me some money, but 30 mins hopefully won't be too much.

I thought part of "Advanced Driving" was to be super smoooooth when changing gears whether up or down the box so that the road speed side of the gearbox and the power side revs were matched, making a 'seamless' crunch-free change....;)

If it's doing it in all gears, I too would suspect clutch drag/ wrong adjustment.

No problems with our 100hp BTW....(y)

Yes, I can do super smooth gear changes, but not very often in my 100HP. I often don't get it perfect, but a good gearbox shouldn't really need it to be perfect. Even when I double declutch a lot of the time it still doesn't feel particularly smooth in the 100HP. In the 500 I could barely feel anything when the gears went in, especially when I double declutched. Actually, double declutching doesn't seem to make any difference on the 100HP, but it did make a noticable (but small) difference on the 500. I suppose this suggests that the clutch could be dragging.

Is there some way (an easy way) I can adjust the clutch? My last car had a cable for the clutch which was very easy to adjust. I thought these were self adjusting?

You should never have to double de-clutch, that went out with the ark and push/pull method of steering!

I find that it usually makes the gear change a bit smoother. It should also reduce the wear on the syncro. I agree that you should have to do it, but I really don't want to have a worn out syncro (I had a bad syncro on one gear with my last car).

If the clutch was dragging would it not crunch horribly when engaging reverse?

I was thinking the same thing yesterday actually. Reverse is generally fine. The only strange thing is that I need to wait a lot longer than the 2 seconds that my handbook suggests before selecting it. If I select it without waiting about 4+ seconds then I will get problems. I usually select a forward gear before and then I can select it instantly.

I know somebody (with a completely different car) who had a bad clutch master cylinder and they only noticed the fault with reverse, it wasn't noticable with the other gears.

After reading both posts i would chuck a match in the tank and be done with it. :D
