Hey people,

Just a quick question. My Panda is under a week old and I was just querying about MPG. I've got about 3/4 of a tank left and I have done about 82 Miles. Does that sound about right? I've read a few posts on here that say the engine needs to get worn in a bit and this will improve? I mainly use it for urban use i.e 30, 40 and the odd 60 limit.

I find it difficult to use a high gear to conserve petrol because it's only a 1.1 if I go up a hill in 4th and the traffic slows the panda struggles a bit. To be honest travelling to work everyday is stop start traffic.

I really wouldn't worry about measuring mpg until the car has at least 1,000miles on the clock. Small Fiat engines do seem to change completely after a few thousand miles, both in terms of performance and mpg. Don't be too gentle with it. They really thrive on being revved.
 
vast experience of on board computers (OK I exaggerate - total 2 cars) seems to indicate they are a little over optimistic on the mpg front and only real way is brim the tank,drive around then brim it again, oh and do the conversion from miles per litre to miles per gallon - divide by 0.22 I think. Our Panda a 1.2 seems to be doing 48 mpg. This assumes the recorded milesage is accurate of course and not overreading like most speedos.
 
Best way is to fill up to the brim, drive until nearly empty,and refill again to the brim to see how many litre's have been used. Divide litre's by 4.545 to convert to old fashioned gallons.
The trip computer on my 1.2 reads 3mpg over the true figure, (i manage around 46mpg in winter, and 52mpg in summer, but i have managed a genuine 60mpg on a gentle run).

thank you kipster1 - I wouldn't get a GCSE now would I. Slight muddle between divide and multiply on my part. Wasn't there some confusion with the Americans once about miles and km leading to some rocket missing the target (maybe the moon?). Curiously, though I entered an industry that was already metricated (I was 18 then now 54) I still can't think in litres and while I work in metric when it comes to room sizes or distance it's feet inches and miles. Guess that's because that's what I was originally taught in.

Another accurate way is to wait until your warning light comes on then fill right up. Use all the fuel until the warning light comes on again then you know you've used the same amount (as usually the warning light comes on when 6 litres are left) Divide the amount of litres used by 4.546 to give gallons, then divide the miles done by the gallons used.

If you want to work out cost per mile (in fuel only of course) then times the cost per litre by 4.54 ( about £4.54 a gallon then for diesel and £4.00 a gallon for petrol) then divide the cost per gallon by the miles per gallon. Simple! My personal best was 82.2 miles per gallon in the MJ

Not a particularly accurate way to measure it, but it will give figures somewhere in the region of.
 
Well I didn't empty the tank but I worked it out and got 44 mpg, which I'm pretty pleased with. It's weird to me as my old POLO used to take ages for the first half a tank to drop and the second half emptied much quicker. My fanda is a lot more consistent in how the gauge goes down. So basically I thought I was driving really crap.
