Engine warning light came on a couple of days ago and the engine is down on power.
Managed to get it into the dealers this morning for a quick diagnostic check. Looks like there is some major failure of the fuel system - could be the pump gone wrong, fuel pressure is not right apparently. The car is with them and they are saying it may take some time to properly diagnose and fix. Fortunately it is still under warranty (18m old, 20k). Once it is fixed the POS is going to be up for sale. I now understand why used ones are so cheap. The last three new cars I had needed only one warranty fix between them. This has been in FIVE times .
They ain't a cheap car once you've paid for all the extras (like centre rear belt, split fold seat, air-con) which are standard on the competition, and then the depreciation looks something horrendous! Our old Subaru was heavy on the juice, but by God it was solid and 100% reliable. I would happily have set off across the Gobi desert in that thing.

The worst part about it all is that an elderly relative has just bought a Panda (not collected it yet) because I said it was economical and good to drive (which it is) and recommended the damn thing. I feel so guilty now.

Sorry to hear that you have suffered, I've managed 27k since last june doing courier work and my MJ has not missed a beat, surely if the likes of BMW, SAAB, GM, Suzuki etc use Fiat power train products they can't be that bad.

Thats very very unusual, this type of problem is almost unheard of on the panda...interesting to see how this progresses but first impression is boost sensor.
