Panda 4x4 1.2 - done 18000 miles - i've had it from new. It's started squeaking (when it does it it's a constant squeak and sometimes it's quite loud) from the rear right rear wheel. It doesn't do it all the time and never from cold. It also stops when breaking or when the car is going round a corner (either way - seems that anything that shifts the weight left or right stops it) and the squeak doesn't stop in neutral.

I thought it might be something stuck in the pad / dics but it's still going so I don't think it can be that. I tried to check but with just the right rear side wheel jacked up I can't even turn the wheel - is this the 4 wheel drive system and do I need both rear wheels off the ground or is the squeak maybe a stuck caliper that's stopping the wheel moving ?

I'm asking here before I take it to Fiat as a) the dealer isn't local and b) no doubt they will suggest new discs and pads all round

Thanks...

Yep - handbrake was off ( car was chocked at front wheels and rear left) . The wheel wouldn't turn - so maybe that's my problem ?

Due to the 4x4 system, if you only have one wheel on an axle jacked up it will not turn, you need both wheels off the ground. I don't think your squeak is anything to do with the transmission.
As posted earlier, the squeak almost certainly comes from the rear disc brake. To prove this, pressing the brake pedal gently should stop the noise.
You could pay your dealer good money to strip and clean the rear disc assembly but it will only reduce the noise temporarily. As long as you have ensured that nothing serious is faulty you should try to live with the noise.

Its more than likely the brakes squeeling, copperslip does dry out quite quickly, mines started humming in reverse now and again, so might be worth trying the above stuff (I know I will)

I've driven the car some more and the squeek does go if you brake gently or when accelerating - but when it squeeks it's too loud to live with !

I'll take it to my local man to have a look I think ...

Just to add my 2p worth.

The handbrake cable and/or pins connecting handbrake cable to rear brakes had part siezed on my seicento causing squeel as brake not fully released after applying handbrake.

I would suggest if symptoms are early then some WD40 on the coupling between pins and cable ends and freeing until the cable can rotate a little on the pin, followed by some oil to keep it clear.

Might save someone a lot of hassle as it cost me a cable and shoes to resolve as I left it and didn't realise it was just the pins siezing. (y)

I not sure if this applies to the rears, but, just in case -- some disc pads are deliberately designed to squeal when they need replacing (a small metal tab is placed so it only contacts the disc edge once the friction surface has worn far enough. Fairly sure the Panda fronts do this (those that don't have a pad wear warning light -- like the 4x4). Although generally, front pads wear quickly and rears last 'for ever', the 4x4 rears do seem to wear relatively fast. Mine needed replacing at 24000 miles.

Hi,

Just wonsering if you'd ever got to the bottom of this.

My 2005 Panda 4x4 has exactly the same problem, loud and annoying squeak cooming from the rear that goes away on bends or when you touch the brake or pull on the handbrake. Fiat have had it in a couple of times under warranty and say there's nothing they can see wrong - we'we tried new pads, cleaning calipers, copper grease etc and it keeps coming back.

Any ideas?

Alan
