I know some of you out there have gone to the expense of buying a locking fuel cap for your beloved panda
My dealer (not drug dealer :D) called a couple of days back to make sure that everything was okay with my HP.
I took the opportunity to asked him about the fuel cap. He explained to me that when the vehicle is locked a pin secures the fuel cap in place(y)

Glad I didn't go out and waste money on something I don't need :bang:

Not sure the dealer has given you the right info there.I've just been to check mine and both the fuel flap and the cap itself can be removed while the car is still locked

I'm afraid your dealer is talking utter 'mince' mate.

Perhaps he should be a drug dealer - his knowledge of the product he sells might be more accurate.

Believe nothing further he tells you.

Just pay the £16 and you'll be sorted.

:D Thats not correct...my 55 eleganza and my 07 100 hp both did,nt have that.
I swapped the caps over when I traded mine in...

My grande punto didnt come with one either i thinks fiat is penny pinching.....

that said my Dealer said it was fitted with an anti syphone valve  theat all well and good but it doesnt stop some prick pouring sugar in for example..

bet you can get an after market cap for less than £15 though had to replace teh one on my sisters KA and managed to get her one for £6.50 from a local motorfactors...

I did get one from a motor factors cheaply when I first got my car (one of the first produced with the stupid non-locking fuel cap :bang:), as there wasn't a locking fuel cap available from Fiat. I've just replaced it with the Fiat one, as the cheap one was reaching the point of not wanting to open any more and WD40 simply wasn't working. Sometimes cheap is expensive in the long run.

Also, the official one has a key kind on pockets as the cutting is inset into the blank just like the ignition key with no teeth on the edge.

Er, my offical one isn't like that,it looks like a normal Key with a Blue Fiat thumb piece.Unless they have changed them since April.:)

no more "pressy button, flippy outty keys"?

We talking about official ignition keys, or official FIAT petrol cap keys?

My petrol cap key is as described above - black head, with the cutting inset into the blank.

Pre-2005 cars had fuel caps that opened with the flippy out ignition key...

The fuel cap I bought from Fiat has a large key with a serrated edge... Had it have been a flat key the same as the ignition, I was going to get the lock reverse engineered and change the pins to match the ignition key so I didn't have the extra key, but that wasn't to be...

Perhaps if your car is post-2005, the previous owner had a pre-2005 Panda and swapped over the fuel caps when getting the new car and got another key cut to match their original key so that they could still hand over the 2 original keys with the car they were trading in, and keep the locking fuel cap?

When Fiat did the changeover it was near impossible to get a locking cap from Fiat. I was quoted for a complete lock set and a blank fuel cap when I asked about it first... Took a bit of searching to get any locking fuel cap to fit then...

Hi Whippet, your not the only one to be told this big fat lie.

I was told the same by the dealer on the test drive of my panda 100hp while we were in the petrol station, so I promptly locked it and tried, to his amazement the cap and flap opened fine,

Never trust the dealer ;)

:cry:Thought it was too good to be true!

You're right...my dealer is either misinformed or a LIAR (n)

As he also drives an HP my suggestion is that he is the latter.

On my wish, my dealer made me one to open with my ignition key.......
A little bit more expensive but it works great.(y)
Cost me about 50 euro, dont exactly know howmuch that is in GBP.
So it CAN be done....:D

the fuel cap situation with the pandas is a rare disappointment from fiat on this model - i mean, come on fiat - you should have made this standard.

my bloody seicento even has a locking fuel cap, locked with the ignition key. fiat penny pinched badly on this..wonder if the shiny hyped 500 will come with one :)

How long did it take?

It took 2 days and he needed my original (spare) key to test the cap, i had it done while the car was waiting in the shop (waiting for a new year and its reg.) 01-01-07.
But it can be done anytime.
The reason (as told here in holland) Fiat took out the locking fuelcap is that to many people had trouble with opening it (big hands).
The seicento also has lost its locking cap here in holland when they started to call it 600 (last 2 years)
There is also a anti siphoning thingy installed, as menitoned earlyer so stealing petrol is difficult thru-out the filling hole.
But because i wasn't affraid of stealing petrol but from jealous people putting $#it in my tank i looked for the locking one.
I will call my dealer this weekend to ask him is he can make caps and send them to GB but i think he will need your key??!!?
