Question Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

I've got a 100HP and want to hardwire my Snooper Evolution

Anyone done this or done something similar. Is there anything I can use behind the headunit or the cigarette lighter?

Just waiting for the hardwire to arrive from Snooper.

Thanks

Andy

Re: Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

I thought that these things were being made illegal?

Just don't speed and you won't need to worry about where the speed cameras are! Save yourself £100.

They already are AFAIK. Only GPS type ones are legal to use.

Re: Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

well i thought they were still legal as it was contested in court that the Wireless telegraphy act the police used to use to convict people along the lines your only meant to hear things that are meant for you however this was based on or around listening in on the old analogue non-encrypted police radios and someone set a president by the fact the radar emitted from a speed device been recieved and translated into a beep by the unit wasn't listening in

(anyway i digress sorry Andy )

assuming you have a cigerete lighter in your panda that is switched by the ignition i'd spur off that (take the fuse out of the cig lighter plug you have currently for the unit and fuse it down via an in line fuse of the same rating)

failing that you could wire in caravan S relay to the battery or splice it into the main feed to the fuse box:

http://www.towsure.com/product/1828-...bination_Relay

this only provides power when the engine is running and turns off when you stop the engine

Hope that helps

Re: Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

Thanks for a decent response!

And yeah I can't see how laser detectors are illegal, as it detects light so everyones eyeballs should then be illegal too

It's not the detectors which are illegal, it's the laser jammers or "garage door openers" which interfere with the signal. Detectors are pretty much pointless though because by the time they've noticed the signal the laser gun has already got a speed reading

Re: Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

I have one too, I got somebody at work to wire it in for me, not sure where into though, although the wire disappears behind the dash toward the fuse box. (he is a qualified auto elec).

Of course these things are not illegal, how on earth would snooper etc... get away with selling these things.
They are GPS technology. as they have all the cameras, schools and high risk zones (downloaded) stored on memory, as well has having the laser detector. You can get a separate radar etc detector, which plugs in, but i got sick of it telling me about the electric doors at sainsburys etc.

I like the fact it will display an accurate speed also....

Especially when I am traveling at over 150mph past a school in my panda...

ust don't speed and you won't need to worry about where the speed cameras are! Save yourself £100.
I think, if the Cameras are there due to them being an accident blackspot etc... (a valid reason for them) then surely advanced warning about these black spots are a good thing. And my snooper will continue to tell me about these black spots better than a sign or a semi hidden camera.

Re: Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

The GPS ones wouldn't be illegal, I just don't see how they could make something like that illegal. The laser diffusers I can see being made illegal, because they are directly interfering with a police unit, and therefore directly avoiding prosecution. GPS ones just receive the info from a database, and warn you in advance, and I would say that's indirect interference with the system. Not saying I'm against either, I'm all for pre-warnings of speed cameras, my tomtom has an add-on for it, but the laser diffusers just seem barely legal to me.

Again, sorry to TallAndy for junking up his thread with stuff irrelevant to his question. I don't actually know where to start with wiring anything to an electrical source.

And how on earth does it interfear with a police unit

I've got one of these, and am thinking of adding the optional wirelessly interfaced Radar detector thingy for it.

It prevents them getting a reading by "diffusing" the signal when they point the speed gun at you and causing the gun not to get a reading. They deliberately prevent a police officer performing his duties and it used to be the case that you could be arrested for perverting the course of justice which carries a maximum of 7 years in jail. You're better off being caught speeding tbh. I think legislation was brought in recently to specifically ban them but I haven't got a copy of it to hand.

Detectors are a waste of money imho - the police speed guns take so little time to get a reading that by the time the detector alarm has gone off the police are filling in the paperwork

Re: Hardwiring Snooper Radar/Laser Detector

I used to have (well I still have it but don't use it) a Bell 550 which is a radar and laser detector.

Sure for laser its pointless as by the time you have picked it up you are done anyway, but the radar detector was extremely good for picking up Gatsos and the best thing about it was if it picked up nothing you could tell that the Gatso wasn't on. Was interesting to see how some were on for a few months then switched off again.

I've done some great overtakes when people slow down for cameras that aren't even on.

But since there have quibbles about the legalities of it i've stopped using it. I got 5 years use out of it though.

I borrowed a friend's Bell 550 a few years back for a test run. Back then I think Hampshire only had 2 Gatso's across the entire county and it would seem both of them were live, but my lasting memory of it was driving through towns with it on - it was very efficient at detecting shop automatic doors
