| The element of suprise! | Re: 100hp oil make sure you check it when the engine is cold and car is on a level surface, shouldn't have a problem then, keep an eye on the oil in the future as they use quite a lot ![]()

| Re: 100hp oil Seems that some use a lot and some don't use any at all, a bit like Alfas.

| Re: 100hp oil Depends on the way you drive it. My 100HP uses a litre of oil (5w40) per 4700 miles.

| Re: 100hp oil Looks like it depends how they were built. Mine uses virtually no oil at all and is caned quite a bit. ...or maybe 5w40 is too thin, if it's using that much.

| Re: 100hp oil Mine used a bit before it's first service, seems since it hasn't touched a drop.

| Re: 100hp oil At 100 degrees a 5w-40 is going to be the same thickness as most day-to-day oils (0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-40) and it's at operating temperature that a car is likely to use it's oil. There's no way the engine in a Panda is high performance enough to need a thicker oil such as Mobil 1 15w-50 Motorsport Formula or Castrol Edge 10w-60. These would lead to a reduction in fuel economy too. If the oil was too thin when it's cold (the first number in an oil's viscosity refers to it's flow rate at zero degrees) then the car would smoke on start up as the oil would have crept past the seals. I'm running mine on Mobil 1 0w-40 and haven't noticed this at all. Mine does use a small amount of oil, but nothing untoward IMO considering the way it gets driven most of the time. Ben

| Re: 100hp oil True, but to use a litre in 5000 miles might not produce noticeable smoke.

| Re: 100hp oil I've put a litre in mine so far (half litre every 4k miles) but my car does tend to be driven harder than most. Topped up with some Castrol GTX semi-synth in mine, but I'm thinking of shifting to fully synth at the first service.... Chris

| Re: 100hp oil I brought my car new, its only used around 250ml of top up oil in the last 12,500miles. And you expect a small amount to be used as the oil gets around the engine bay etc when new My advice is to be gentle with the car for the frist 1,000miles as a run in 'road' period. I always let the car warm up without pushing it and give it 20-30secs to idle before switching off. I would be really worried on a modern car if it used all its oil in 4700miles ![]()

| Re: 100hp oil Both our Pandas seem to have reduced their thirst for oil since reaching the 30,000 mile mark. One is 1.2 the other 1.1 and they both consume more oil when driven for long periods at motorway speed.
