Heater temperature

Hello All,

I had a longer drive that normal today (usally I only drive for 10-15mins) and had to use the heater on my MJ. In the first 20 minutes I put the temp up to 25 degrees Celsius without using the auto climate control (by this time i was driving at 70mph) and the the temp was fine. In fact I was nice and warm.

After driving for about 40mins or so, 25 degrees became cold. I put the temp up. It warmed up for a bit then went cold. This happened in all temp's besided the Hi setting which just stayed hot and cooked me.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I then tried the auto climate control. This turned whatever temp i had before (without it switch on) cold and took a while to warm up. I gave up on the auto climate because as soon as you put it on it would direct air flow only to my feet and the pressure would be low. As soon as I tried adjusting these the auto climate would switch off.

Am I doing something wrong or is my heating system playing up?

Are you driving with the windows open or closed?

Even though the AUTO light goes out when you change any setting (in your case, the air direction) the rest of the system (fan, temp, etc) remain on AUTO....

If you then adjust the fan this becomes MANUAL, but the temp control remains on AUTO (although it will be more difficult for the system to maintain temp if the fan and direction are both on MANUAL)

So basically...Anything you change goes into MANUAL mode until you press AUTO....The rest (untouched) remain on AUTO

Hope this helps!

Re: Heater temperature

My Multipla (Y-reg JTD ELX) has the same problem - as the journey goes on, I have to set it higher and higher. It seems to read 'wrong'. A the start of a journey, '18' is actually more like 21, so it starts there. On a long journey, it needs to be on 26 to keep at a comfortable '21'ish. (The Multi's system uses 'old fashioned' rotary knobs, but it is climate control, with auto fan speed and controlled temperature, sunshine sensor, etc)

The sensor that measures the temp inside the Panda is in the little round grille just above the gear lever. There's a small fan in there that sucks air from the car over the temperature sensor used by the electronics. Have you got anything that may be covering that that may be affecting it?

Pete

So its a crap system then. Unless you want your left foot (the vent points out of the rear of the centre concole) getting warm air only at a low pressure, you have to go manual.

Ah thats what that little thingy is. Nothing is blocking it. I'll look inside it later. The car is only 3 months old though!

Pretty sure all climate control systems work using the lowest vents and then addding vents further up and more fan as needed if they think the cabin temperature needs adjusting.

One thing that someone commented on the Mondeo was that the fan in front of the air temperature sensor actually changed the temperature of the air and they found that by disconnecting it the sensor appeared more accurate. I never had any real problems with it, but it might be worth a try to see if that helps. I do also wonder about the location of the sensor as I imagine it's not completely insulated from heat coming from behind the dash area which on a long journey could explain why the system decides to pump colder and colder air into the cabin....

I have to make a long journey again tonight so i'll have a quick look behind the dash too see if the sensor can be disconnected.

What you have said does make sense though.

I'd assume the fan in front of the sensor works best when drawing in warm air to cool the car.
